FCDS Advances to Championship Game but Falls to Riverdale Baptist (1/3)

In the semifinal game on Saturday morning, Forsyth Country Day fought past Lynwood (CA) by a score of 58-51. The Furies jumped out early on the Knights with solid team defense and excellent offensive execution. Forsyth entered the second quarter ahead 16-9 but Lynwood made a run midway through the quarter, knocking down a couple of 3-pointers. At the half the Furies led 25-23. In the third period FCDS again found their offensive rhythm and Nick Sink knocked down a couple of 3-pointers to push the Fury lead to 7. In the fourth period Lynwood crept back to within 2 before FCDS was able to extend the lead back out in the final minutes. The game ended with Forsyth victorious at a score of 58-51.

It was an excellent team win as Forsyth had to fight through foul trouble and a large deficit in the foul count. Nick Sink led the way with 20 points. Tyler Lewis and Georges MaNgoue pitched in 8 and 9 respectively. FCDS is now 15-2 and will face off against local Washington power Riverdale Baptist in the final later today.

In the championship game Saturday evening, Forsyth fell to local powerhouse Riverdale Baptist 56-46. The Crusaders of Riverdale, who are currently ranked #10 in the Washington DC area, struck first jumping out to a 6 point lead. The Furies fought back to take a 15-14 lead on a Tyler Lewis 3-pointer at the buzzer of the quarter. The pace slowed down in the second quarter as teams went back and forth. Riverdale tied the score at 23-23 on a lay up at the end of the quarter. The Crusaders jumped out early in the third quarter with a 6-0 run. After a timeout the Furies settled down and fought back into the game on a couple of 3-pointers. Going into the fourth quarter, Riverdale held a one point advantage at 37-36. Again the Crusaders open the quarter with a short run to take a 5 point lead to start the quarter. Forsyth could never get any closer than 3 and cut the lead to 4 with 3 minutes remaining. Riverdale held the ball forcing FCDS to fall and the Crusaders knocked down free throws to seal the win at 56-46.

Forsyth played another hard fought game and was encouraged the entire night by a solid contingent of parents who made the trip to DC. The Furies were led in scoring by Tyler Lewis with 10. Nick Sink and Brandon Goodson finished with 9 each and Colby Lewis added 8 points. Forsyth falls to 15-3 on the season and returns to action on Friday at Ravenscroft.

Furies Open Michael J Gilbert Foundation with Win (1/2)

In the opening game of the Michael J. Gilbert Foundation Tournament benefitting HIV/AIDS Awareness in Washington, DC, Forsyth Country Day ran away with a 77-44 win over New Town from Baltimore. The Furies started the game off holding the Titans of New Town scoreless for the first 3 minutes of the game and opened a 8-0 lead. New Town closed the gap with a couple of 3-pointers but Forsyth made a run to close the quarter ahead 22-13. In the second quarter, both teams struggled offensively to find a rhythm but the Furies maintained there advantage at the half 35-23.

FCDS opened the second half right where they left off in the first with solid team defense and very unselfish play offensively. Despite a early third quarter run by Forsyth, New Town kept the game in striking distance trailing by 16 going into the fourth period. The Furies open the final quarter with a 8-0 burst to take a commanding lead and never looked back. The final score was 77-44.

FCDS played one of their best games of the season both on defense and offensively. Every player not only played, but scored and contributed to the win. Forsyth was lead by Georges MaNgoue with 15 points and was a dominant force on the boards. Brandon Goodson and Corey Gallisdorfer score 14 and 12 respectively as well. Point guard Tyler Lewis scored 11 and dished out numerous assists. FCDS moves to 14-2 on the season and will play the winner of the Lynwood (CA) and MCS Charter (Philly) game tomorrow at 10 am.

Furies Get By Thomasville (12/23)

Forsyth Country Day faced Thomasville in the second day of action in the Wachovia Classic and came away with a 59-50 victory. The Furies jumped out early on Thomasville knocking down four first quarter 3-pointers to lead 26-15 at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter both teams played evenly and Forsyth took a 39-27 lead into half-time. Thomasville turned up the pressure in the third quarter and Forsyth went cold offensively. The Bulldogs pushed back to within six at 46-40 to start the fourth quarter. Forsyth would not let Thomasville any closer than six during the fourth period and pulled away for a 59-50 victory.

Forsyth played hard the entire game but struggled at times with execution offensively. Tyler Lewis finished with 21 points and Nick Sink scored 12 to lead the Furies. FCDS is now 13-2 and will be off until January 2nd when they will travel to Washington, DC for the Michael J. Gilbert Foundation Tournament.

Furies Defeat Western Guilford (12/22)

Forsyth Country Day returned to action in the Wachovia Classic tonight and defeated Western Guilford 61-45. The Furies took command of the game early with tough team defense and unselfish play on the offensive end. At the end of the first quarter Forsyth held a 13-5 advantage. In the second quarter FCDS continued to hold the Hornets' offense in check, allowing just 6 points. Another balanced quarter of scoring for Forsyth had them ahead 32-11 at the half. In the third quarter, Western came out with some fight to try and get back into the game, outscoring Forsyth 14-10 in the quarter. Early in the fourth Western got as close as 12 but they could not get any closer the remainder of the game. The Furies made their free throws down the stretch to finish off the win with a score of 61-45.     

FCDS was led by Tyler Lewis with 19 points. Nick Sink and Colby Lewis pitched in 11 and 10 respectively as well. FCDS will face off against local 1A power Thomasville on Tuesday in the Wachovia Classic.

Furies Boys Defeat Forsyth Home Educators (12/19)

FCDS returned to action tonight after a week lay off for exams with a resounding defeat of the Forsyth Home Educators by a score of 86-46. The Furies jumped out early thanks to solid team defense and sharp shooting from Colby Lewis who had 15 first quarter points. At the end of the quarter the Furies led 28-6. In the second quarter the resilient FHE team fought to remain in the game behind Nathan Miller’s 7 points but the Forsyth depth and size were just to much. At the half FCDS was ahead 48-19. In the second half every Fury player got into the action with 13 players getting into the scoring column. Forsyth played excellent team defense and continue to be unselfish offensively cruising to a 86-46 victory.

Forsyth was led in scoring by Colby Lewis with 17 and Nick Sink with 16. Brandon Goodson pitched in 10 points and Tyler Lewis dished out 8 assists. Jay Hoekstra and Alex Schmidt played excellent games as well pulling down 7 rebounds a piece. Forsyth is now 11-2 and will play next week on Monday and Tuesday in the Wachovia Showcase at Northern Guilford.

FCDS Boys Cruise Past High Point Christian (12/12)

  The Forsyth Country Day boys traveled to face off against High Point Christian and pulled away for a 79-53 victory. The Furies jumped up on the Cougars early on three early 3-pointers by Colby Lewis and some stifling team defense. Lewis scored 13 first quarter points and had the Furies ahead 25-14 at the end of the quarter. HP Christian would not go away and fought back to within single digits as the Furies went cold in the second quarter. Jesmire Martinez tossed in 10 points in the quarter and brought HPC back to within 6 with the score at 34-28 at the half. The third period was where Forsyth asserted themselves again to take command of the game. The Furies began to finish some of the shots they missed earlier in the game and held the Cougars offense in check on defense. At the end of the third FCDS led 58-41. In the fourth period Forsyth continued to play unselfish offensively and solid on defense to extend the lead to the final score of 79-53.     

The Furies played one of their most balanced games of the year with 5 players finishing in double figures. Colby Lewis finished with 15 points  and 5 rebounds and Nick Sink finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds.  Jay Hoekstra completed the first double double of his career scoring 11 and pulling down 16 rebounds. Guards Corey Gallisdorfer and Tyler Lewis also played well as both players pitched in 6 assists and scored 10 and 9 points respectively. Forsyth is now 10-2 and will be off for exams until next Friday when they face Forsyth Home Educators.

FCDS Boys Defeat Village Christian (12/9)

On Chuck Jones Appreciation Night, the Furies came out sluggish but pulled away from Village Christian 59-35. In early first quarter action, Forsyth struggled to find any offensive rhythm but still led 10-9. Forsyth opened up the offense a little more in the second quarter pulling ahead 27-18. In the third period Forsyth outscored the Village Christian 16-12. A solid defensive effort to begin the fourth quarter by Jay Hoekstra, Corey Gallisdorfer, Brandon Goodson, Jack Young and Georges MaNgoue ignited an 8-0 run to start the fourth to put the game away. The final score was 59-35.
Forsyth moves to 9-2 on the season and will travel to face High Point Christian on Friday.

Mercedes-Benz Showcase Results

In the second day of action at the Mercedes-Benz Holiday Showcase, Forsyth Country Day defeated NW Guilford 73-61. The Furies jumped out early on the Vikings taking a 10-2 lead before NW found their rhythm and fought back to a final first quarter score of 14-11. After trading baskets early in the second quarter, Forsyth took a commanding lead with some unselfish play and offensive execution in the final minutes of the quarter. At the half the Furies held a commanding 42-28 lead. FCDS picked up where they left off in the 3rd quarter, pushing the lead to 20 points. In the fourth quarter the Vikings fought hard to get back in the game but Forsyth was able to hold on for a 73-61 victory.

It was a balanced offensive game for Forsyth with all 9 players who played getting into the scoring column. Nick Sink led the way with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Colby Lewis finished with 12 points and 4 assists.  Forsyth moves to 8-2 on the season and will return to action at home on Tuesday against Village Christian.

FCDS Falls to Christ School (12/5)

In the final game of the night, Forsyth faced two-time defending state champions Christ School and fell 79-54. The Greenies used their size early jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes. The Furies struggled offensively early and were down 17-4 before finally getting on track to play relatively even the remainder of the quarter. In the second quarter the pace slowed and the Furies continued to fight. A late run by the Greenies pushed the half-time lead to 42-24. In the third quarter the Christ School size and talent finally wore Forsyth down pulling out to a 67-41 lead by the end of the quarter. While Forsyth continued to fight tough, Christ School was just too tall and talented in the end. The final was 79-54.

Although the Furies lost, it was a great atmosphere in the Childress Activities Center as the student body was out in full effect for Toga night. A special thank you to all those students who cheered on the boys.  Forsyth was led by Nick Sink with 26 points and Colby Lewis with 17. FCDS drops to 7-2 and will face NW Guilford in the second day of action in the Mercedes-Benz Holiday Showcase.

FCDS defeats Box Hill (Australia) (12/2)

The Furies returned home tonight after the holiday break and defeated a tough and talented Box Hill (Australia) team 66-58. In the first quarter Forsyth traded 3-pointers for Box Hill 2-point baskets but trailed 12-10 at the end of the quarter. The action intensified and the pace of the game quickened in the second quarter with both teams dropping in 21 points. A big 3-pointer by Josh Wilcher of Box Hill just beat the halftime buzzer to put the Furies down 33-31 at the intermission. In the third quarter, FCDS stepped up the defensive pressure with senior Colby Lewis taking on the task of chasing Wilcher, the talented Box Hill point guard. Solid team defense and 12 points by Nick Sink in the third period allowed Forsyth to pull ahead 50-46 by the end of the quarter. The Furies solidified the win with a run to being the third quarter along with a timely 3-pointer by Jay Hoekstra and three inside baskets by Georges MaNgoue. FCDS went into the final minute up by eleven points and held on to win 66-58.

This was a great team victory for the Furies over a veteran, talented Australian team who had not lost yet on their tour of the U.S. Forsyth was led by junior Nick Sink who scored 26 points and 13 rebounds and freshman point guard Tyler Lewis who pitched in with 10 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. Seniors Jay Hoekstra and Colby Lewis did a phenomenal job leading the team and contributing at both ends of the floor as well. The Furies are now 7-1 and will face two-time defending state champion Christ School at home this Friday night in the Mercedes-Benz Holiday Showcase.

FCDS Wins Unimin Harvest Hoops Tournament (11/29)

On Friday in the opening round of the Unimin Harvest Hoops Invitational at Mitchell High School, FCDS defeated RS Central 66-50. Despite an abundance of Forsyth traveling calls and turnovers, the Furies held a 15-12 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, FCDS got more aggressive offensively resulting in 9 foul line points in the quarter. At the half the Furies led 30-22. Forsyth started the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 12 point lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 17. RS Central got within 9 points once early in the fourth but Forsyth held on to win 66-50.

FCDS was led by Tyler Lewis who scored 20 points and Georges MaNgoue with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Colby Lewis pitched in 13 points and Nick Sink finished with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 6 steals.

In the championship game on Saturday, Forsyth took on host Mitchell High School coached by Daron Williams, a former player under Coach LaRue at Greensboro College. Forsyth fell behind early to the Mountaineers trailing 16-15 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, FCDS finally got their offensive game going scoring 27 point in the quarter. Mitchell hung close to the Furies thanks to some aggressive offensive play that got them 11 points from the line. At the half FCDS led 42-36. In the third quarter Forsyth played some excellent team defense and outscored the Mountaineers by 7 points to finish the quarter with a 61-48 lead. In the fourth Forsyth kept up the pressure and puled away for a 85-62 victory.

Forsyth was lead in scoring by Brandon Goodson with 18 points and Tyler Lewis with 14. Colby Lewis and Nick Sink both pitched in 13 a piece. Jay Hoekstra, Georges MaNgoue and Corey Gallisdorfer all played excellent games pitching in 9 points each. Both Nick Sink and Colby Lewis were selected for the All-Tournament team and Tyler Lewis was named MVP of the tournament. FCDS is now 6-1 and will face Box Hill of Australia at home on Tuesday.

FCDS Boys Slip Past Calvary Baptist (11/24)

FCDS faced a tough test on the road against Calvary Baptist Day and prevailed 68-54.  There was a great atmosphere on the Calvary campus with both teams having a rousing student section. Early on the teams traded baskets in fast-paced action but the Furies held a 20-15 lead after the first quarter. Six Forsyth players scored in the quarter but they were led by Nick Sink and Colby Lewis with 5 points apiece. In the second quarter the paced slowed as both teams struggled to knock down shots. Forsyth led by double digits on several occasions but could not pull away from the Cougars. At the half the Furies led 32-26. The Cougars came out firing in the 3rd quarter, knocking down four big 3-pointers to take a 40-39 with about 3 minutes to go in the quarter. From that point on FCDS outscored Calvary 9-2 to close out the quarter 48-42. The Furies continued to execute well in the fourth quarter working the ball around to get Nick Sink a few easy baskets inside. After a few key stops and fast break baskets by Tyler Lewis Forsyth pulled away for a 68-54 victory.

Forsyth was led by Nick Sink with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Colby and Tyler Lewis pitched in 13 points apiece as well. FCDS goes to 4-1 on the season and will travel to play in the Mitchell County Thanksgiving Tournament this coming Friday and Saturday.

FCDS Runs Past Watauga (11/22)

In the first home game of the season, the FCDS boys came out firing on all cylinders. Utilizing intense full court pressure and 8 first quarter points from both Colby Lewis and Tyler Lewis, the Furies jumped out early on the Pioneers. At the end of the first quarter Forsyth led 25-8. In the second quarter, FCDS continued their excellent defense, holding Watauga to only 9 points. Brandon Goodson and Colby Lewis both pitched in a pair of 3-point baskets to push the half-time score to 45-17. The Pioneers refused to give up and came out with renewed intensity in the 2nd half and outscored Forsyth 18-16 in the third quarter. Despite the tough play from Watauga, Forsyth continued to execute well and held on to win 78-49.

It was a total team effort in this victory for Forsyth. Four players scored in double digits and all players contributed both offensively and defensively throughout the game. The Furies were led in scoring by Tyler Lewis and Colby Lewis who each scored 18. Georges MaNgoue scored13 and grabbed 8 rebounds. Nick Sink finished with 5 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. FCDS is now 3-1 and will travel to play Calvary Baptist Day on Monday night.

FCDS Boys Defeat Oak Hill Red (11/18)

The FCDS boys travelled to Mouth of Wilson, VA to take on the Oak Hill Red team last night coming away with a 76-62 victory. The Furies jumped out early with some excellent defense forcing several turnovers that led to easy scores. After an Oak Hill time out, the Warriors made a run of their own but Forsyth still led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, FCDS broke the game open with a couple of timely 3-pointers by Brandon Goodson and 7 points from Nick Sink. The Furies continued the excellent team defense to hold on to a 43-27 lead at the half. Despite being down, Oak Hill never gave up and continued to fight hard against Forsyth. Gans hit 9 big third quarter points to bring the Warriors back to within 9 points but the Furies pushed the lead back to 11 by the end of the quarter. FCDS held the double digit lead through the remainder of the game with solid defensive pressure to hold on to a 76-62 victory.

The Forsyth bench came up big in this game with Brandon Goodson scoring 15 and Alex Schmidt scoring 10. Corey Gallisdorfer had another outstanding defensive game and chipped in 9 points as well. The Furies were lead in scoring by Nick Sink who contributed 16 and Tyler Lewis scored 13. The Furies are now 2-1 and will host Watauga in the home opener this Friday night.

FCDS Boys go 1-1 in Cannon Tip-Off Classic (11/14-15)

In the opening round on Friday night of the Cannon Tip-Off Classic Forsyth faced Flora MacDonald, the #4 ranked team in the NCISAA 1A State rankings. It was a tough opening opponent for the Furies as Flora employed a frenetic, fast paced style of basketball. FCDS fell behind early after missing a few 3-pointers and a handful of lay ups in the early minutes of the game. Highly rated Luke Cothron of Flora MacDonald paced the Cougars with 11 first quarter points hitting three big 3-point baskets and Nick Sink added six points to lead FCDS. In the second quarter, Jeff Wherry of Flora hit four 3-pointers pushing the Cougars lead to as much as 18. Forsyth kept fighting and made a run of their own late in the half with couple of key 3-pointers and defensive stops. At the half Forsyth trailed 50-42.

To start the second half, Flora made another big run behind 10 points from Cothron to push the lead to 17 at the end of the quarter. The Furies again showed toughness and character by making a run early in the fourth quarter. Tyler Lewis and Georges MaNgoue had 9 and 8 respectively in the quarter helping the Furies get back to with six with 6 minutes to play. Despite the valiant effort, Forsyth could never get any closer and Flora Macdonald held on for a 96-84 victory.

In the consolation game of the Cannon Tip-Off Classic, Forsyth took on a scrappy Covenant Classical team. The Furies jumped out early hitting on all cylinders taking a 14-2 lead. A few early 3-pointers from Colby Lewis and Brandon Goodson along with excellent passing put Forsyth ahead 34-9 at the end on the first quarter. Forsyth kept up the defensive pressure and never looked back going on to defeat Covenant 86-29. Forsyth went to the bench early with every Fury playing in every quarter of the game. The entire team played excellent defense and executed well on the offensive end. Corey Gallisdorfer drew 2 charges during the game and Nick Sink played an excellent all around game for FCDS. Tyler Lewis averaged 20 points and over 5 assist for the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team. Forsyth is now 1-1 and will travel to play Oak Hill’s B team next Tuesday.
