Haleigh Hadfield and Jenny Temas hit the boards hard and Farrahn Wood led the team from the point guard position all game long, creating plays for the inside post players. Wesleyan Christian Over Fury Girls (1/20)
The girls’ varsity basketball team traveled to High Point for a PACIS conference game with Wesleyan Christian Academy. The team rebounded and played hard defense but could not overcome very cold shooting and unforced turnovers. FCDS was led in scoring by senior Farrahn Wood, who had 14 points in the defeat. A hard, full-court press changed the game in the second quarter, as Forsyth held Cary to just 10 points in the quarter which enabled the Furies to take a 33-32 lead into halftime. The second half was played equally as hard as the Fury girls swarmed the floor continuously and hit the offensive boards with purpose. Cary Academy made a strong push with one minute left on the clock, but FCDS held tight and won the game by a final score of 68-64. A Fury lineup that was without two key players, charged back from a 16 point first-half deficit to tie the game. Rabun Gap persevered however and took home the victory 51-44. FCDS newcomer, Ella Oakley led a “furious” charge in the second half and finished with 15 points, dominating the inside. The Furies charged out early and were relentless for nearly the entire game, registering a 77-24 victory over their hosts. The blazing transition game of the Furies overwhelmed the home team Cougars. The return of senior power forward Jenny Temas, who had missed the previous two games while participating in a state all-star volleyball tournament, was immediately felt, as her energy and speed helped her to lead the Furies with 21 points. But, as usual, it was a complete team effort for nearly four quarters as evidenced by all starters being in double figures with Hatfield’s 16 points, Wood’s 15 (including numerous 3-point bombs), Brown’s 14 and Oakley’s 10. Oakley also had 7 blocks, most of which she recovered herself or blocked to a teammate. Brown also continues to be a defensive force with numerous steals and forced jump balls.
The Furies continue the season with a home game this Friday, November 18, versus Westminster Catawba, out of Rock Hill, SC. Tip off for that game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
