Fury Girls at Bobcat Classic (12/31)

Battleground Academy (TN) 62, FCDS 42

In the 3rd place game of the Bobcat Classic in Bluffton, SC, FCDS fell to Battleground Academy (TN) 62-42.  FCDS only trailed by three at the half (25-22), but Battleground pulled away in the fourth quarter.  Hannah Allgood paced FCDS with 19 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Taylor Duggins added 11 points.  FCDS falls to 10-5 on the season and returns to action next Friday (January 9) at Ravenscroft.

Fury Girls at Bobcat Classic (12/30)

In the semifinals of the Bobcat Classic in Bluffton, SC, FCDS fell to HKT (SC) 54-53.  FCDS had a chance to win with six seconds remaining, but missed a layup.  FCDS controlled the rebound, but Kaitlyn Kiser's desperation putback was just a split second after the buzzer.  Hannah Allgood led FCDS with 15 points.  Taylor Duggins and Brey Dorsett added 13 points each.  FCDS falls to 10-4 and will play in the 3rd place game on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.

In the quarterfinals of the Bobcat Classic in Bluffton, SC, FCDS began the game with a 15-2 run and prevailed over South Effingham (GA) to advance the semifinals on Tuesday at noon with a 49-40 victory. Brey Dorsett scored 15 points for the Furies, and Taylor Duggins added 14 points.  K. Durrence led South Effingham with 19 points.  The Furies improve to 10-3 on the season and will play Hunter Kinard Tyler (SC) on Tuesday in the semifinals.

Fury Girls Take Durham Academy (12/19)

On Friday night, the varsity girls' basketball team traveled to Durham Academy for a key NCISAA 3A battle. The Cavaliers jumped all over the Furies to begin the game and led 17-9 after the first period. After the sluggish start, the Furies picked up their intensity on the defensive end and went into the locker room at the half tied at 28. In the third quarter, FCDS continued to apply the pressure and pushed ahead 42-35 at the end of the stanza. In the final period, FCDS went to a zone defense to try and keep DA off balance. The final result was a 51-41 victory. Hannah Allgood paced the Furies with 18 points and Taylor Duggins added 14. Laurel Burk led DA with 16 points. FCDS improves to 7-3 on the season and is on a four game winning streak. Durham Academy falls to 2-5. The Furies are glad to be done with exams and return to action on Monday and Tuesday in the Wachovia Classic at Northern Guilford. On Monday, FCDS takes on perennial power Thomasville and will take on a very good Page squad on Tuesday. Game time for both games is 6:30.

Varsity Girls Over High Point Christian (12/12)

On Friday night, the varsity girls’ basketball team traveled to High Point to take on High Point Christian. The Furies began the game with full court pressure and quickly jumped to a 23-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was much of the same as FCDS outscored HPCA 23-11 and led 46-21 at the half. In the third quarter, the Furies continued the pressure and went on a 14-4 run to push ahead 60-25. In the fourth quarter, FCDS went to a zone defense and the Furies did a great job communicating and held their opponents to just three more points in that period as they cruised to a 74-32 win. Ten of the twelve Furies scored and three were in double figures. Brey Dorsett led the charge with 18 points, Hannah Allgood poured in 17 points, and Taylor Duggins added 15. Caroline Cox led HPCA with 11 points. The Furies have won three in a row and are now 6-3 on the season. After a week off for exams, FCDS returns to action on Friday, December 19 at Durham Academy. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

Furies Girls Take Lady Knights (12/9)

On Chuck Jones Night, the Furies played host to the #3 ranked (NCISAA 2A) Village Christian Academy Lady Knights. The Lady Knights came into the game with a 9-0 record and an average winning margin of 33 points per game. The game began with VCA jumping ahead 6-0 on two deep three pointers. The Furies quickly settled down and were able to take a 9-8 lead. VCA continued to attack the Fury defense and led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, FCDS missed numerous inside scoring opportunities and the Lady Knights took advantage. VCA built a 10-point lead and the Furies were forced to burn a timeout. After the timeout, FCDS began to convert inside and only trailed by six at the half. In the second half, the Furies came out of the locker room and played inspired team basketball. Only trailing by three to begin the fourth quarter, FCDS continued to be aggressive in transition and against VCA’s diamond press. The Furies began to convert on their layups and quickly erased the deficit! After a couple of minutes of lead changes, FCDS finally took the lead for good with a little over two minutes to play. The Furies were able to push the lead to five with under a minute to play. VCA converted on a short jumper with four seconds to go to cut it to three. After a time out, FCDS was able to inbound the ball and allow the time to run out. The Furies celebrated a 55-52 win and improved to 5-3 on the season. Brey Dorsett played an outstanding game and led the Furies with 20 points. Hannah Allgood was able to attack the interior of VCA’s defense and chipped in 14 points. VCA was led by S. Fuller’s 15 points. The Furies return to action on Friday when they travel to High Point Christian Academy for a 5:30 tip-off.

Furies Girls Take Charlotte Christian (12/5)

On Friday night, the FCDS varsity girls' basketball team traveled to Charlotte Christian to tangle with the Lady Knights. The Furies jumped on CCS with full court pressure right out of the gate and rolled to a 55-37 victory. FCDS led 24-11 at the half and increased the lead to 21 at the end of the third quarter. Eleven of the twelve Furies scored in the contest. FCDS was led in scoring by Brey Dorsett with 17 points while Hannah Allgood chipped in 12. Charlotte Christian was led by Christal Barnett with 13 and Morgan Kirk who scored 11. The Furies improve to 4-3 on the season and will take on Village Christian Academy (9-0) on Tuesday evening in the Childress Center at 6:30.

Box Hill Takes Fury Girls (12/2)

On Tuesday night, the varsity girls’ basketball team hosted Box Hill Senior Secondary College from Melbourne, Australia. Box Hill began the game with a 7-2 run. The Furies began to find their stride however, and the score was tied at 13 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, FCDS continued to play great defense, but couldn’t convert on the offensive end and  Box Hill led at the half 23-17. In the second half, the visitors were able to take control of the game with a great display of transition offense. Box Hill defeated the Furies 66-36. Samantha Creed led Box Hill with 20 points. Kellie Page and Sarah Collins each added 11 and Nicole Goodridge chipped in with 10. Taylor Duggins paced the Furies with 15 points, while Hannah Allgood added 9. The Furies fall to 3-3 on the season and look to regroup on Friday when they travel to Charlotte Christian.

Furies Girls Take Calvary Cougars (11/24)

On a cold and rainy Monday evening, the varsity girls' basketball team made the short trek to Calvary to take on the Lady Cougars. Behind their pressure defense, the Furies jumped out to a 14-2 first quarter lead. In the second quarter, FCDS struggled to put the ball in the basket, but continued the pressure on defense and led at the half 23-8. The third quarter was much of the same as the Furies outscored the Lady Cougars 12-6 in the period to lead 35-14 at the end of the period. Although Calvary outscored FCDS 12-10 in the final period, the Furies cruised to a 45-26 victory. All 12 Furies saw action in the game and 11 of them scored. Hannah Allgood paced the Furies with 11 points. Ann Katherine Barker led Calvary with a game-high 12 points. The Furies are now 3-2 and will take some much needed days off for the Thanksgiving holiday. FCDS returns to action on December 2 when it hosts Box Hill College (Australian Travel Team) in the Childress Activities Center at 6:00 p.m.

FCDS Varsity Girls Escape with Victory over Watauga (11/22)

On Saturday at high noon, the varsity girls’ basketball team took on the Lady Pioneers from Watauga High School in their home opener. The first quarter was a high scoring affair and ended with Watauga slightly ahead 22-19. The scoring slowed down a bit in the second quarter and Watauga led at the half 34-32. After halftime, the Furies came out of the locker room with a renewed spirit. FCDS started to find a groove and outscored the Lady Pioneers 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 45-41 lead into the fourth quarter. In the final stanza, each of the two teams clamped down on defense and made it tough for the opposition to score. Junior Hannah Allgood put the Furies ahead 52-49 when she made two free throws with just under a minute to play. Watauga answered with a left elbow jumper to cut the lead to one. FCDS missed a layup with 14 seconds remaining giving the Lady Pioneers one final chance to win. After a timeout, Watauga inbounded the ball with seven seconds to go and got another open shot from the left elbow. Luckily for the Furies, the shot was a bit strong and FCDS held on for a 52-51 victory. Junior Hannah Allgood led the Fury charge with 19 points, 7 rebound, 7 assists and 2 steals. Senior Brey Dorsett pitched in with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while freshman Jenny Temas added 7 rebounds.  Nicole Tesh paced the Lady Pioneers with 19 points. FCDS improves to 2-2 on the season. The Furies take the short trip to rival Calvary on Monday!

Oak Hill Takes Furies Girls (11/18)

On an extremely cold night, the varsity girls’ basketball team traveled to Oak Hill to take on the nationally ranked Lady Warriors. The Lady Warriors’ roster consists of five players 6’0 or taller. Using their size, Oak Hill quickly jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back. At the half, the Furies trailed 42-16. In the second half, FCDS continued to fight but were unable to overcome Oak Hill’s big lead. The final score was 79-34. Lakeesha Daniel and Ondrea Shaw paced the Lady Warriors with 16 points apiece. Brey Dorsett led the Furies in scoring with 12 points. Hannah Allgood added 7 and Taylor Duggins contributed 6. FCDS falls to 1-2 and will have their first home game this Friday vs. Watauga.

Furies Girls at Cannon School Tip-off Classic (11/14-15)

Game 1

On Friday night, the FCDS Varsity Girls’ Basketball team opened their season, under new head coach Craig Dawson, against Flora MacDonald Academy in the Cannon School Tip-Off Classic. The Furies raced to a 22-0 first quarter score en route to an 81-3 win. Eleven of the twelve Fury players scored in the contest. Kaitlyn Kiser led the way with 14 points, 4 steals and 3 assists. Brey Dorsett poured in 13 points, 5 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists, while Taylor Duggins added 12 points 3 assists and 3 steals. Caroline Rearden and Hannah Coulter contributed 8 points apiece. Rearden added 8 rebounds, while Jenny Temas led the Furies in rebounding with 9. FCDS improves to 1-0 on the season and advances to the championship game where they will face the host team, Cannon School. Flora MacDonald falls to 0-3.

Game 2

In the championship game of the Cannon School Tip-Off Classic, the FCDS Varsity Girls’ Basketball team faced a tough Cannon School team. After a sluggish start, the Furies settled down and only trailed at halftime by two points, 26-28. In the second half, the Furies continued to battle but UNC signee Krista Gross was just too much for the Furies to handle. FCDS came up short in a 60-52 defeat. Gross led all scorers in the game with 44 points and was named the tournament’s MVP. Brey Dorsett led FCDS with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Taylor Duggins added 9 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Farrahn Wood contributed 12 points and Hannah Coulter added 9 rebounds. Dorsett and Duggins were named to the All-Tournament Team. Cannon School improves to 2-0, while the Furies fall to 1-1. FCDS travels to Oak Hill Academy on Tuesday night.
