Furies Cross Country at NCISAA State Championship (10/28)

The varsity boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams traveled to Charlotte to compete in the NCISAA State Championship Meet on Friday, October 28. The Furies entered the meet knowing that personal and season best times were for the taking on the fast McAlpine Park course.

The girls’ team faced the challenge of the most competitive state meet in NCISAA history. They were led by Vanessa Bateson, who ran a season best time of 20:28. She was followed closely by Haley Doherty, who ran a personal best of 20:56 to break 21:00 for the first time. Sarah Keiser, in her last cross-country race as a Fury, and Sydney Browder surged through the last half mile together. Keiser ran a season best time of 21:31 and Browder ran a personal best of 21:32 to break 22:00 for the first time. Ashley Bohle continued her late season surge with a huge personal best of 21:50 (first time under 22:00) to round out the scoring for the Furies. Brynlee Parker (22:24) and Gracie Thompson (22:42) both ran their best races of the year to earn personal best times in positions six and seven for the Furies. The Furies ran their best team race of the year to earn 6th place overall. Their average time was 21:16.

The boys had a tough act to follow as they also faced a deep field but thry did not disappoint as every member of the team ran a personal best time. They were led by Adam Chase who followed up his impressive PACIS all-conference performance with another person best (17:45). He was followed closely by A.J. Doherty who broke 18:00 for the first time (17:58). The boys continued to run as a unit with Jordan Budd, Arthur Kimbro, and Bryan Christ surging through the pack, all in personal best times of 18:17, 18:18 and 18:20 respectively. Joel Schneider ran a steady race and picked off runners throughout his run to secure a personal best time of 18:33 (first time under 19:00) and finish as the top middle schooler. David Murray ran a personal best of 19:08 to round out the top seven and secure the boys their best race of the season. The future is bright for this young team as every competitor returns for at least the next 2 years. The boys finished 12th overall with an average time of 18:08.

The team would like to thank the entire school community for their support this season.

Furies Fast at PACIS Cross Country Championships (10/20)

The Furies began the championship portion of their season on Thursday at the PACIS Championships. The boys began the day looking to improve on last year’s 5th place finish. A pack of Furies surged to the front early, led by Adam Chase, Bryan Christ, Jordan Budd and AJ Doherty. The pace was fast through one mile and Chase remained with the leaders followed closely by Budd, Christ, and Doherty. Joel Schneider and Arthur Kimbro surged through the woods to try and give the Furies a solid fifth scorer. At the two mile mark, the Furies continued to battle in the lead pack and but Budd went down while trying to pass two other runners…he was in the top ten at the time of his injury. The Furies didn’t let that stop them however and they surged through the last mile. Chase led the way with an awesome performance, breaking 18:00 for the first time (17:53) and earning all-conference honors. He was followed closely by Doherty and Christ, with both running personal best times. Kimbro ran under 19:00 for the first time in, as he finished in fourth position and Joel Schneider also ran a personal best in fifth position for the Furies. Those top five earned the boys a third place team finish. Matthew Faw ran a personal best in sixth position and David Murray continued his string of top seven performances to round out the top seven.

In the girls’ race, the Furies entered the day knowing that they would be facing tough competition from Greensboro Day, as both teams traditionally dominate the all-conference team and this year would prove to be no different. The girls established themselves early and battled the top runners for Greensboro Day. As the race progressed, Greensboro Day’s top runners pulled away but the Furies continued to chase them, which resulted in some great individual performances. The Furies were led by Haley Doherty and Sarah Kiser. They ran gutsy races to finish in fifth and sixth place overall and each of the two girls earned all-conference honors. They were followed closely by Sydney Browder who closed well to finish in seventh place and also earn all-conference honors. Ashley Bohle ran her best race of the year, in another personal best time to finish in ninth place, earning all-conference honors as well. Gracie Thompson ran in sixth position for the Furies and earned all-conference honors (the only middle school student to earn such recognition this season). Brynlee Parker was the sixth finisher for the Furies, to give the girls six runners in the top twelve. Claire D’Alessio ran a personal best time to round out the top seven for FCDS. Greensboro Day was a little too strong up front and took the title but the Furies finished an impressive second.

All of the Furies ran very well with most running personal best times. This was the last conference meet for the seniors. Congratulations to all!

Furies Challenge Cannon School (10/13)

The Fury girls’ varsity cross country team ran an excellent team race to defeat Cannon school on Thursday. The ladies tackled the very challenging course, which was more difficult than usual due to the recent rain, with determination. Haley Doherty set the tone by taking the lead at the halfway point and blazing to her first individual win of the year. Sydney Browder and Sarah Keiser worked together to finish before Cannon’s second runner, which essentially wrapped up the win. Gracie Thompson and Ashley Bohle continued to come on strong at the end of the season and both finished in front of Cannon’s third runner to complete the scoring for the Furies. Carolyn Ansel and Brynlee Parker finished ahead of Cannon’s fifth runner to round out the top seven for the FCDS.

The boys’ team faced a tough Cannon School team and the team win was determined by just three points, in favor of the Cougars. The boys were led by Adam Chase, who ran a gutsy race as he chased Cannon’s first runner and broke 20:00 on the difficult course. AJ Doherty, running his best race of the season, was close behind, providing the Furies two runners across the finish line before Cannon. The race would come down to the next six positions however, which were separated by less than 40 seconds. Cannon won the close battle by taking positions four, five, and six. Bryan Christ, Joel Schneider, and Arthur Kimbro were close behind in positions seven, eight, and nine. Cory Hanes and David Murray rounded out the top seven finishers for the Furies.

In the Middle School race, Ashtyn Smith was the top finisher for the Fury girls while Ben Mitchell was first for the FCDS boys. This was the last race for the FCDS sixth graders this year. They have performed very well all season and been an inspiration to everyone on the team.

The rest of the team will compete next at the PACIS Championship Meet on Thursday, October 20th, at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro.
