Furies at NCISAA Cross Country Championships (10/30)

The cross-country team ran their last meet of the season at the NCISAA Championship meet on Friday, October 30. The boys and girls competed hard in one of the most competitive state meets in recent history with the girls taking 6th place and the boys 8th. The Lady Furies established themselves well early in the race and battled to the finish. The girls were led by the 19th place finish of Hollis Lineberger who ran one of her best races of the year in 20:35. The rest of the girls ran as a pretty tight pack with positions 2-7 running within 50 seconds of one another. Clara Reinartz ran in 2nd position for the Furies breaking 22:00 again (21:58). Finishing strongly with her were Carrie Logan (22:02 in her last race as a Fury)) and Kate Cavenaugh (22:05). Sarah Keiser (22:15) battled hard and completed the scoring for the Lady Furies. Kristen Orr (22:27 in her last race as a Fury) and Brynlee Parker (22:48) provided depth and rounded out the top 7 for the Furies. The girls have had a terrific season – Seahawk Invite Champs, Undefeated Regular Season, PACIS Champs, NCISAA 6th place.

The boys team took a chance and established themselves near the front of the pack early. The race went out quickly and the pace never slowed. The boys were again led by Taylor Boone (18:03 in his last race as a Fury). Ben Stallworth (18:11) and McLain Wilkinson (18:14) continued to run at the front of the Fury pack and closed well. David Bohle ran one of his best races of the season to finish in 18:31 in his last race as a Fury. Philip Waugh (19:05) ran tough to complete the scoring for the Furies. Daniel Schreiner (19:11 in his last race as a Fury) and Cameron Lawson (19:16) provided depth to round out the top 7. The boys have had a great season -  Undefeated Regular Season, PACIS Champs, NCISAA 8th place.

The team  appreciates the tremendous support from the FCDS community this season!

Cross-Country Teams Capture Conference Titles (10/22)

The boys and girls cross-country teams continued their winning ways by winning the PACIS Championship meet on Thursday. Both teams entered the race undefeated in regular season meets and they were eager to win the championship. The girls ran their best team race of the year to take the title. Greensboro Day finished 1st and 2nd individually but the Furies won on the strength of their depth. The Furies were led by Hollis Lineberger (season best 20:20!) who set the pace early and finished 3rd  to earn all-conference honors for the 4th consecutive year. Sarah Keiser provided the Furies with the strong 1-2 combination they have had all year and finished 4th (20:47) to earn all-conference honors. Kate Cavenaugh pulled away during the last mile to run a huge personal best (21:08!) and finish 5th overall to earn all-conference honors. Clara Reinartz continued her steady improvement by breaking 22:00 for the first time (21:31 – personal best!) to finish 6th overall and also earned all-conference honors. Kristen Orr (21:42 – personal best!) did an excellent job of pushing the pace for the 3rd – 7th  girls and rounded out the scoring for the Furies in 7th place overall. Carrie Logan (season best 21:58!)  and Brynlee Parker (22:17 – personal best!) ran great races to finish 9th and 10th overall and give the Furies 7 of the top 10 places.

The top 3 individual places in the boys race were taken by Wesleyan and Greensboro Day but the boys depth was once again too much for the opposing teams. Taylor Boone again led the boys. He went out with the leader and eventual winner to push the pace early. This was important for his teammates who all ran off his lead. Taylor finished 4th overall to earn all-conference honors for the 4th consecutive year. Ben Stallworth ran the best race of his career (17:46 –personal best!) to earn all-conference honors. Philip Waugh ran aggressively early and it paid off as he ran 3rd (season best 17:55!) to also earn all-conference honors. McLain Wilkinson was in the mix with the leaders throughout the race and finished in a season best 18:00. David Bohle continued his fine season (18:27) to finish in 9th place, round out the top 5 and secure the victory for the Furies. Hunter Sturkie (season best 18:39!) and Daniel Schreiner (18:42) finished strongly in 11th and 12th place overall to give the Furies 7 runners in the top 12.

Most team members were running their final race of the season and there were many personal and season best times. The team appreciates all of the support from the FCDS community. The team will compete next at the NCISAA Championship Meet on Friday, October 30th.

Philip Waugh showed he is fully recovered from injury as he ran 2nd for the Furies in a huge season best, 18:02. He was followed closely by McLain Wilkinson who helped set the pace for the Furies by battling the frontrunners from Greensboro Day. Furies Battle at the Beach (9/12)

The cross-country team enjoyed its return to the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington this past weekend with the girls winning the varsity race and the boys finishing in third place in the varsity race.  Twenty-two team members ran personal or season best times in their races (see list below – season best in bold; personal best in bold italics)!

The girls were led by individual medalists Sarah Keiser and Hollis Lineberger. They established themselves early and battled to stay on the lead with a pack of girls behind them – the top eight girls in the race were within 14 seconds of each other. Both of them closed strongly with Sarah running a personal best to finish second and Hollis running a season best to finish fourth. Their high finishes laid the groundwork for a possible team title but the outcome was still to be determined. Clara Reinartz continued her string of personal bests by running a strong third place for the Furies. Kristen Orr blazed down the back stretch, passing several competitors to finish just behind Reinartz.   Carrie Logan held off several runners down the stretch to finish in under 23 minutes for the first time this season and round out the scoring for the Furies. Kate Cavenaugh and Diana Neben outran every other teams sixth and seventh runners to complete this fantastic team performance. The girls had to wait until the awards ceremony to find out the team champion and it was announced then that this had been the closest race of the day with the champion and runner-up separated by just two points. The team waited anxiously to hear the results and when they heard Butler H.S. announced as the runner-up the girls knew they had won the championship. The team erupted when it was made official that Forsyth Country Day was the Champion of the Girls’ 2009 Varsity Race!

Furies Cruise at Cannon (9/1)

The cross-country teams traveled to Concord on Tuesday to run the tough Cannon School course. Both teams ran terrific team races and captured victories. Every team member completed the race with several running personal bests and a few completing their first 5k cross-country race (see times below - bold indicates season best; italics indicate personal best). The girls were led by the one-two punch of Sarah Keiser and Hollis Lineberger. They worked together throughout the race and closed strongly to finish second and third overall. Carrie Logan, Kate Cavenaugh and Kristen Orr established themselves early, ran tough and closed out the team scoring for the Furies, finishing sixth through eighth. Brynlee Parker (tenth) and Kylie Chase (eleventh) ran great races to round out the team’s top seven finishers.

The boys faced a stiff battle from Cannon who placed two runners in the top three spots. Led by Taylor Boone’s solid fourth place run, the Furies worked their plan to perfection and demonstrated why cross-country is a team sport. After the top three finishers there was nothing but Fury blue with the FCDS boys taking places four through ten. Daniel Schreiner closed really well to run second for the Furies. He was followed closely by the dominating pack of McLain Wilkinson, Ben Stallworth, Hunter Sturkie, David Bohle and Cameron Lawson.

Furies Cross Country at City/County Championships (8/25)

The cross-country team began the season at the Forsyth County Championships on Tuesday, August 26 competing in the championship races and the open race. The races were held on the challenging course at East Forsyth High School. The team appreciates the tremendous support of parents, friends and staff.

The girls’ team finished a strong 3rd in the team competition. Hollis Lineberger ran at the front of the pack and led the Furies with a tremendous first effort of the season. She earned first team all-county honors with her strong result. She was followed by Sarah Keiser who served notice that she is ready for the highest level of competition. Sarah earned 2nd team all-county honors in her first race ever for the Furies. Seniors Carrie Logan and Kristen Orr ran tough races and passed several runners during the last ½ mile to earn 3rd team all-county honors. Kate Cavenaugh had a good start to her season as well and rounded out the team scoring for the Furies. Danielle Nelson and Kylie Chase ran steady races and also had solid finishes to give the Furies seven runners in the top 35.

The boys’  team took 5th place in a very competitive race. They were led by Senior Taylor Boone who earned all-county honors by finishing in 15th place overall.
