Furies Field Hockey Flourishes in Big Week!
Tuesday the varsity field hockey team headed to Cary to face Cary Academy. The score sat at 0-0 throughout the first half. Cary controlled the first few minutes, as the Furies were slow to shake off the sluggishness of the bus ride. They picked up momentum towards the end of the very physical first half. At half time the Furies decided they had had enough, and came back with a vengeance in the second half, scoring six goals! Cameron Herndon and Alex Hunt sealed the midfield and knocked in the first three goals. Emily Krewson connected on a pass from Mary Scott Neill to add number four, and Meg Church had an unassisted goal moments later. The final goal was scored by seventh grader Mandy Wolfert on a great pass from senior Claire Wilson. Coach Ring complemented the smart play of junior Eliza Williams at midfield, who quickly adjusted to shut down the speedy offense of Cary Academy. Goalies Amy Lewis and Betsy Butler had strong showings as well.
Thursday the Furies were back on the road to face St. Mary’s. In a hard fought match, the Furies tipped the scales to win 3-1. The defense was simply fantastic. Chelsey Willetts, Caitlin Swauger and Emily Anne Moore were stable and strong in the backfield, limiting a strong St. Mary’s offense to ten shots on goal. Goalie Amy Lewis maintained composure and had seven saves. Cameron Herndon controlled the middle of the field, feeding the forwards some fantastic passes. In the first half, Moriah Rhyne wrapped the goalie on a pass from Meg Church. Goal two came from a beautiful shot by Laine Herndon, who broke through the defensive line. The final goal was set up by Eliza Williams, who passed to Caroline Rudolph, who shot for the corner and Meg Church picked up the tip. It was a complete team effort, as everyone on the field contributed to the win.
The Furies face Providence Day today.
Furies Field Hockey Takes Chapel Hill High (8/20)
The on field battle was as hot as the day’s temperature Wednesday as the varsity field hockey team battled the Chapel Hill High School Tigers. The score sat at 0-0 at the half. Amy Lewis was simply unbelievable in the net, making several spectacular saves. The lone goal was scored after multiple passes in the circle. Carrie Logie took it deep in the corner and offered a great pass to Laine Herndon, who dropped it back to senior Captain Alex Hunt, who tossed an aerial shot deep in the cage. The victory was a complete team effort; every single player on the field gave 100% and contributed to the victory. Cameron Herndon played sixty minutes of intense hockey, controlling the center of the field. Unrelenting in the backfield, Eliza Williams stabilized the defense. On the front line, Emily Krewson’s speed proved a key factor in moving the ball up the field. Coach Kristen Ring commented, “I am incredibly proud of this team. Chapel Hill attacked hard from the first whistle, and our girls settled down and played some tough hockey. It took every one of them to come up with this victory!”
