Furies Football Finishes with Win (10/31)

The Fury football team finished its season 6-4 as they defeated Southlake Christian on Friday night by a score of 42-28. It was a great night to honor our seniors as they all played an important role in the win. Our offense scored quickly as Luke Johnson connected with John Hewell for an 18 yard touchdown pass. Senior Jay Hoekstra nailed the extra point. Later in the first quarter Luke Johnson threw a bullet to John Hewell for a 20 yard touchdown pass. Jay Hoekstra added the extra point.  In the 2nd quarter, Luke Johnson threw an 11 yard pass to John Hewell to send the Furies up 20-0 at half time. On the Furies' first possession of the 2nd half, Luke Johnson hit an open Andrew Key for a 15 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was added by Jay Hoekstra. Southlake took its next possession down the field and scored a quick touchdown. Southlake recovered the onside kick and scored 15 points in less than 2 minutes. The end of the 3rd quarter brought the score to 27-15. The Fury offense answered the call and scored 15 points in the 4th quarter to ensure the win. Peter Bambalis caught a pass from Luke Johnson for a touchdown to start the 4th quarter. Senior Ross Pulliam had a great run and plunged into the endzone to convert the 2 point attempt. Later in the 4th quarter Luke Johnson threw a perfect ball to John Hewell for his 4th receiving touchdown of the night. Luke Johnson passed for an impressive 412 yards as he went 25-28 and threw for 6 touchdowns on the night. Junior defensive back Jed Helvey intercepted two passes in the first half to keep Southlake scoreless in the first half. Senior Josh Strickland rushed the ball for 102 yards and caught 5 passes for 57 yards. Senior Graham Gibbons led the defense with 7 tackles to help secure the win for the Furies. Senior Court Mauzy played well on both sides of the ball as he caught 1 pass for 33 yards and added 2 tackles on defense. Senior Ross Pulliam led the offensive line, which had a great night, providing great protection for Luke Johnson and for opening huge holes for senior running back Josh Strickland.  

It was a special season that was capped off with the Furies winning their last 3 games in a row. A special thank you goes out to all of our seniors for their commitment, hard work and leadership.

Furies Football Over Asheville 21-0 (10/24)

The Furies played in yet another rainy cold game as they traveled to take on Asheville School. The Fury offense started out quick as Luke Johnson connected with Peter Bambalis for a 38 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was unsuccessful. In the 2nd quarter Andrew Key was on the receiving end of a 20 yard touch down pass from Luke Johnson. Will Eversmann caught a pass from Luke Johnson to convert the two point conversion to send the furies up 14-0 at half time. Jed Helvey received the kickoff to start the 2nd half and went 89 yards to Asheville School's 1 yard line. Josh Strickland plunged ahead for a 1 yard touchdown run to send the Furies up 21-0. Luke Johnson had another great night passing as he went 13 of 19 for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Luke's performance last night gave him 1101 total passing yards for the season.

The Fury defense played another solid game as they recorded their 3rd shutout of the season. Jed Helvey and Ross Pulliam led the way with 6 tackles apiece. Garrison Pollock and Adam Fulton each added a QB sack.

The Furies are now 5-4 and return home on Friday to face Southlake at 7 p.m. Friday will also mark senior night, so everyone is asked to get to the game early so we can recognize our seniors.

Furies Football Zips Northside Christian Academy 27-0 (10/17)

Our varsity football team played in yet another rainy cold game as they travelled to Charlotte to face Northside Christian Academy.  Peter Bambalis scored on our very first drive after receiving a 30-yard pass from Luke Johnson.  Jay Hoekstra added the extra point to send the Furies up 7-0. Later in the 1st quarter Jed Helvey scored on a 9-yard run. Jay Hoekstra added the extra point to go up 14-0. Jay also added a 27-yard field goal to give the Furies a 17-0 lead at half time. In the 4th quarter Jay Hoekstra nailed a 27-yard field to give the Furies a 20-0 lead. With about 6 minutes left in the game Luke Johnson connected with Peter Bambalis down the sideline for a 54-yard touchdown pass to send the Furies up 27-0. Luke Johnson had a great game as he went 19 of 29 for 272 passing yards. John Hewell and Peter Bambalis each caught 5 passes apiece.

Defensively, our Furies posted their 2nd shutout of the season. Our defense held NSCA to just over 100 yard of total offense. Ross Pulliam led the defensive charge with 5 tackles. Graham Gibbons and Ben Coles each added 4 tackles a piece. Our defensive line had a strong showing as Logan Weddle, Alex Ansel, and Jim Coleman each had a QB sack.

Our varsity football team is now 4-4 and will travel to face Asheville school at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

First Assembly Over Furies Football (10/10)

First Assembly showed why they are in first place and defending state champions last night as they beat the Fury football team 53-28. Our Fury Offense was able to move the ball with a highly effective passing attack. Our Defense was not able to stop the rushing attack of First Assembly as they scored 29 points on Offense. First Assembly intercepted two passes that were returned for touchdowns. First Assembly also scored on a kickoff which seemed to deflate the furies hopes of a comeback. Our Football team is now 3-4 and hopes to turn things around as they will travel to face Northside Christian on Friday. Josh Strickland was injuried last night, but is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for Fridays game.

Furies Football Takes Christ School (10/3)

It was a great night for the Fury football team as they beat Christ School 14-13. Christ School scored first to go up 7-0 in the first half. Our Offense got the ball to start the 2nd half and John Hewell made a great pass to Peter Bambalis for a 79 yard gain to the 2 yard line. On the next play Jed Helvey ran the ball hard and plunged into the endzone making the score 7-7. Our Fury offense scored again in the 3rd quarter when Luke Johnson hit John Hewell in the corner of the endzone for an 11 yard touchdown pass. Jay Hoekstra had a great night kicking the ball as he nailed 2 extra points, and also punted the ball 3 times for an average of 49 yards per punt. Jay Hoekstra also boomed 2 punts inside Christ Schools 20 yardline. Our Fury Defense was led by Will Eversmann with 8 tackles, and Ross Pulliam with 7 tackles.  Peter Bambalis, Jay Baughan and Graham Gibbons each added 5 a piece. Our Fury Deffensive line was led by Garrison Pollock with 3 tackles and 1 QB sack, and Kyle Buffkin who recovered a fumble to help hold Christ School to only 13 points. Christ School attempted a 46 yard field goal with 1 minute left in the game, but our field goal block team was able to block the kick as the Furies went on to win 14-13.

At half time, our senior girls defeated our junior girls in a powder puff football game. A very big thanks goes out to our Fury Club members, families, friends and fans for making this win and night so special.

The Furies are now 3-3 and will face First Assembly, who is in first place in the conference, at home on Friday night. 

Hickory Grove Over Furies Football (9/26)

Our Fury football team played a very strong 6-0 Hickory Grove team. It was a tough night for football as Mother Nature provided us with true "football weather." The rain was coming down sideways and the wind was swirling. Our offense started off slow but was able to score a touchdown late in the first half to make the score 14-6. The extra point sailed wide by only a few inches. Hickory Grove scored twice in the 1st half, but our Fury defense was able to hold the Lions scoreless in the 2nd half. Our Fury defense also recovered 4 fumbles.

Our offense was able to score in the 3rd quarter but was unsuccessful on the 2 point conversion. Our Furies had a chance to win the game late in the 4th quarter when the Furies marched the ball 70 yards down the field to Hickory Grove's 27 yard line with under 2 minutes to play. Josh Strickland did an excellent job at running the football. On 1st and 10 on the Lions 27 yard line, our QB dropped back to pass and fumbled the ball on the Lions' 34 yard line. We were able to recover the ball but were now out of field goal range. The next two plays were followed by 2 incomplete passes. On 4th and 17th, and the game on the line, Hickory Grove came up with a game winning interception on their own 15 yard line .The Furies are now 2-3 and must regroup as they will host Christ School this Friday night. It was a hard fought battle, but unfortunately our Fury football team was unable to find a way to win.

Ravenscroft Over Furies Football (9/19)

It was a long night for the Fury football team as they lost 49 – 6 to Ravenscroft. Jed Helvey caught a touchdown pass from Luke Johnson for the Furies' only score. On defense, Peter Bambalis was able to intercept a pass, bringing his season total to 4. The Furies are now 2-2 and will try to regroup as they travel to play Hickory Grove on Friday night.

Furies Football Over South Davidson (9/12)

It was a great night for the Fury football team last night as we beat South Davidson 20-18. Our Parents Association, Dennis Ring, and the Fury Club organized an incredible tailgate party where hundreds of people took part in all of the activities. WXII choose last night’s games as the “game of the week” and the Furies did not disappoint. Josh Strickland rushed for 206 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Josh’s brother, James Strickland, had two interceptions on defense. Our offensive and defensive line was led by senior captain Ross Pulliam. The Furies are now 2-1 and will face Ravenscroft at home next Friday night. A special thank you goes out to all of our students, families, and friends that came out to support our Fury football team.

Furies Football Falls to Providence 41-0 (9-5)

It was a long wet night for the Furies as they travelled to Charlotte to take on Providence Day. Our Varsity football team was a little banged up going into the game and even more so after. Jordan Smith saw limited action due to a low back strain but is expected to be 100% by next week. Josh Strickland did an excellent job at filling this void and ran the ball hard. Defensively, Peter Bambalis made a great interception on the third play of the game, which gives him three interceptions for the season. This game was a good test for our team and unfortunately we fell short. The good news is that the Furies return home next Friday after two tough road games. The Fury football team (1-1) will be taking on South Davidson (0-3) on the Smith Football field Friday September 12th at 7:30pm. This game will be featured as the WXII Channel 12 Game of the week. It will be a great opportunity for FCDS to showcase our football team and the great students that will be at the game to support the Furies.

Furies Football Takes First of Season over
Westminster Catawba 39-0 (8/29)

Jordan Smith led the team with 267 all-purpose yards and 3 touchdowns, 1 in each of the first 3 quarters. Jordan, had 187 rushing, 54 receiving and 27 kick return yards. Josh Strickland added 2 carries for 67 yards, one that popped for a 60 yard touchdown. John Hewell and Luke Johnson split time at the QB position. John completed 5 out of 12 passes while Luke completed 5 of 7.

Our defense forced 4 interceptions and held WCCS scoreless. Peter Bambalis had 2 interceptions, while Graham Gibbons and James Strickland each picked off another. Ross Pulliam led the defensive charge with 7 tackles. Each of our linebackers, Ben Coles, Will Eversman, and Josh Strickland shared the load with 5 tackles apiece.

 

We were able to play a number of 9th graders late in the game and despite facing some older players, our freshman were able to secure the shutout. FCDS is now 1-0 and is going to travel to face Providence Day (1-1) this coming Friday.
