Stewart was an outstanding goalie on FCDS soccer teams during the late '70s and early '80s. He was a model of consistency in the goal who made difficult saves look easy.
Teammates considered Stewart a dedicated, intense and tough competitor who could always be counted on to make the necessary save, be it a penalty stop or a save in open play.
With Stewart in goal, FCDS had its best three years from 1978-1980 with a record of 58-2-5 and runner-up in the state in his sophomore year and back-to-back state championships in his junior and senior years. During the last 2 years of his time at FCDS, the varsity did not lose a single game.
In 1980, when Stewart was one of the tri-captains, the team only allowed 12 goals in 22 games.
He holds school records for:
most shutouts in a career (37)
most shutouts in a season (15)
most consecutive shutouts (9).
He was named to the NSCA All-South team his senior year and was named to the PACIS All-Conference and NCISAA All-State teams in each of the 1979 and 1980 campaigns.
In addition to the accolades he earned as a stellar goalie, Stewart also participated on the Track & Field team, competing in the high jump and various relays.
After FCDS, Stewart had a very successful career as a goalie at Virginia Tech. He
was:
- Four-year Varsity letter winner at goalkeeper; Two-time co-captain
- 1986 He received the University’s distinguished Frank Loria Award
The recipient is a varsity athlete recognized for dedication and commitment to hard work and fair play, for demonstrated leadership on and off the practice and playing fields, and for athletic and academic accomplishments.
- Stewart holds the VA Tech career saves record with 461, a mark that is 19th all-time in NCAA Division I history while his saves-per-game mark is 18th all-time.
- He played in a school-record 63 games.
- He was a three-time team Defensive MVP and the team MVP one season.
- Stewart’s Virginia Tech teams captured two Metro Conference tournament titles.
Today, Stewart is a long-time associate at Lambert Architecture and Interiors here in Winston-Salem. He is the father of FCDS 6th Grader Chase, 4th Grader Tanner, and 1st Grader Sydney Beason.
