Varsity Lacrosse Takes Greensboro Day (4/29)

In a critical game with playoff implications, the Forsyth Country Day varsity lacrosse team was able to pull away from Greensboro Day School in the second half and obtain its seventh victory of the season. The Furies were sluggish at the start, falling behind 1-2 in the first quarter, and faced a 1-4 deficit at the half. The Furies grabbed the momentum early in the second half and scored seven unanswered goals. Court Mauzy led the offensive effort with 4 goals while Ross Pulliam added three tallies. The Furies defense shut out the Bengals in the second half with an aggressive team effort. Jordan Smith did an excellent job on Greensboro Day’s leading scorer, holding him to one goal, while Captain Grey Smith once again led the team in ground balls. William Pitt highlighted the defensive dominance midway through the third quarter when he beat the Bengal goal keeper with a nice shot after a beautiful clear. Charlie McKinney had 12 saves in the game with 8 coming during the second half shut out. The Furies will play their final regular season game on Thursday night at Smith field.

Williamsburg Over Furies Lacrosse (4/26)

Following a tough game on Friday night, the Forsyth Country Day varsity lacrosse team was unable to challenge the visiting Williamsburg Lacrosse Club on Saturday. The Furies fell behind by 4 goals in the first quarter and were not able to mount a comeback. The Furies ended the first half trailing 8-1 and eventually lost 12-2. Charlie McKinney, starting his first game for an injured Robbie Wannenburg, did an outstanding job in the goal, making 14 saves against the Warriors shooters. With the loss, the Furies fall to 6-9.

The Christ School Over Furies Lacrosse (4/25)

The FCDS varsity lacrosse team suffered a tough loss Friday night at the hand of visiting Christ School. Neither team was able to gain a significant advantage in the first two quarters with the Greenies holding a 6-5 advantage at the half. Christ school opened the second half strong and carried a 9-5 lead into the final quarter. The Furies mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, but the effort fell short with the Furies on the short end of a 9-8 score. Captain Taylor Weddle led the Furies offense with a career high 4 goals, while Robbie Wannenberg led the defensive effort with 15 saves. With the loss, the Furies fall to 6-8.

Furies Lacrosse Has Winning Weekend (4/18-19)

The Furies varsity lacrosse team got back on the winning track this weekend in Wilmington, NC. After a long bus ride on Friday, the Furies jumped to an early lead on Wilmington Ashley Friday night and never looked back. With a solid team effort the Furies beat Ashley 11-4. The next morning, the Furies faced a strong Cape Fear Academy team. Once again FCDS came out strong, holding a 5-0 lead at the half and an 8-3 lead at the end of the third quarter. Robbie Wannenburg lead the defensive efoort with several key saves. Unfortunately, Cape Fear, holding a man advantage for most of the fourth quarter, was able to score five goals and tie the score with less than a minute reamining in the game. Playing much of the first overtime once again with a man down, the Furies were able to stop the Cape Fear momentum and cause a second overtime. Ross Pulliam finally ended the game by scoring his 5th goal during a frantic scramble in front of the Cape Fear goalkeeper. With the two victories, the Furies move to 5-7.

Furies Fall Short Against Bengals 8-7 (4/15)

Furies lacrosse fell just short against rival Greensboro Day 8-7 on Tuesday night in Greensboro. The Furies went up early in the first quarter 2-0 with goals from Lawson Kluttz and Court Mauzy. The Furies kept up the momentum and scored 2 more times to go up 4-0 early in the second quarter off another goal from Lawson Kluttz and a goal from Taylor Weddle. However, the Bengals battled back some to close the lead to 4-3 going into halftime on the GDS Senior Night. Greensboro Day outscored FCDS 4-1 in the third quarter with Connor Bruce having the only Fury goal. Greensboro Day led 7-5 going into the last quarter of the game. The Furies scored twice in the fourth quarter from Jordan Smith and Jack Haus off assists both times from junior Court Mauzy and the Bengals scored once. Robbie Wannenberg had 7 saves and the support of defenders William Pitt, Gray Smith and Jordan Smith. The Furies return to action this weekend in 2 games in Wilmington against Ashley High School and Cape Fear Academy. Good luck Furies lacrosse!

Varsity Lacrosse falls to Cannon School 5-2 (4/11)

FCDS varsity lacrosse fell to Cannon School of Concord 5-2 on Friday night. Cannon went up 1-0 halfway through the first quarter, but the Furies battled back in the second quarter with goals from sophomore Ben Taylor, off an assist from Jordan Smith and junior Connor Bruce to lead 2-1 at halftime. Despite being a man down for 3 minutes due to an illegal stick, Cannon scored 3 times during those 3 minutes to jump ahead 4-2. The Furies held Cannon until late in the 4th quarter when Cannon scored a final time. Robbie Wannenberg had another great night with 14 saves and had great support from defenders Gray Smith, Jordan Smith and William Pitt. The Furies return to action tomorrow morning against Decatur High School.

Providence Day over Furies Lacrosse (4/8)

The FCDS varsity lacrosse team suffered its fourth loss of the season last night at the hand of defending state champion Providence Day School (7-1). The Chargers got off to a quick start, taking a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. Despite the most productive offensive quarter of the season, scoring 4 goals in the second quarter, the Furies trailed 10-4 at the half and were unable to cut into the deficit in the second half, eventually falling 12-4. Four different Furies scored goals during the contest, with defenseman William Pitt getting the first goal of his career on a beautiful coast-to-coast clear. Ross Pulliam, Court Mauzy, and Lawson Kluttz also contributed goals. Captain Grey Smith once again led the team in ground balls and anchored a solid team defensive effort. Robbie Wannenburg had an excellent night in the goal, making 14 saves. The Furies return to action with a critical contest Friday night against Cannon.

Durham over Furies Lacrosse (3/20)

Playing short-handed, the varsity lacrosse team put up an early fight, but eventualy lost to visiting Durham Academy. After spotting Durham a goal in the first quarter, the Furies traded goals with the Cavaliers through the first half of the second quarter on tallies from Court Mauzy and Ross Pulliam. Unfortunately, the Furies were unable to score in the second half or to stop the Cavaliers from scoring. Jordan Smith led the Furies in picking up ground balls with 15. Robbie Wannenburg had 14 saves through three quarters with Charlie Mckinley making 2 saves in the fouth quarter. With the loss, the Furies drop to 3-2.

FCDS Varsity Lacrosse vs. RJ Reynolds (3/17)

With a solid team effort, the Forsyth Country Day varsity lacrosse team beat cross town rival RJ Reynolds Monday night. The Furies were able to overcome an early goal by Reynolds with aggressive defense, a relentless pursuit of ground balls, and balanced scoring to take a 6 -3 victory.   Led by team captain Grey Smith with 17, the Furies dominated the ground balls 97 to 40. Six different players scored the Furies’ six goals, with four of those goals being assisted. Robbie Wannenburg had another great performance in the goal with 24 saves.
