Fury Lacrosse Team Bows Out of State Tournament

The FCDS varsity lacrosse team ended their season last Friday night with a tough loss to the Cary Academy Chargers.   The Furies lost in the final minutes by a score of 12- 11, in what was the first round of the NCISAA state tournament.   The Furies entered the playoffs seeded 9th and faced the Chargers who were seeded 8th.  Jordan Smith scored four times and Sam Pulliam added another four in the loss.  Both of these captains led the team in scoring this year and had stellar FCDS careers.   Ben Coles and James Hewell each also added to the Fury scoring total.

Fury Lacrosse Team Clinches PACIS Championship with Win Over Wesleyan (5/3)

The Fury varsity lacrosse team finished their 2010 regular season with a 14- 2 conference win against Wesleyan Monday night.  The victory gave the team a final PACIS record of 4-0 this season and locked up the conference championship.  The team’s seniors received their acknowledgement for great careers during a pre-game ceremony and then the team unleashed a scoring barrage on the Trojans as the opening whistle blew.   Seniors Jordan Smith, Sam Pulliam, Jordan Martin, Artie Shaw, and Thomas Rickabaugh all scored in the FCDS onslaught.  Sophomore Chris Miller added two goals and freshman Will Perry added two assists and a goal.   Forsyth Goalie Charlie McKinney had six saves for the team.  The Furies await their NCISAA state tournament playoff seed later this week and will likely play in the first round either Friday or Saturday.

Cary Academy Tops FCDS in Lacrosse (4/28)

The Fury Varsity lacrosse team tangled with Cary Academy Wednesday night, losing by a final score of 13-6. The team’s senior captains contributed the bulk of the scoring as Sam Pulliam had another hat trick and two assists while Jordan Smith added two goals and two assists. Sophomore Chris Miller also had a goal as did freshman Blake Bozymski. Bolton Smith delivered another amazing outing in net for the Furies, stopping 22 shots against the impressive Cary team.

The Furies finish their season at home Monday night against Wesleyan. The Furies are in the hunt for a playoff berth. Come on out and support the team.

Furies Lacrosse vs. Wesleyan and Greensboro Day

The Fury varsity lacrosse team won a pair of conference match-ups this week as they enter the stretch run.  First, the Furies beat Wesleyan on Tuesday, by a score of 12-2.  The game featured the first goals from two FCDS seniors, defensemen Stewart Sturkie and Marshall Tate.   Sophomores Chris Miller and Conner Marceron added their first career varsity goals as well.   Friday, the Furies beat Greensboro Day 12-6.  Junior Ben Coles led the scoring barrage with four goals, Sam Pulliam contributed four goals to his totals, and sophomore Drew Rothrock scored his first career varsity goal.  Team captain Artie Shaw supported the squad with five assists.

Goalies Bolton Smith and Charlie McKinney teamed up for 10 saves in the latter contest and delivered a solid week.    

Varsity Lacrosse Drops Game to Christ School (4/16)

The varsity lacrosse team hosted #5 ranked Christ School Friday night and came up on the short end of a high-scoring contest by a final score of 17-12.  Senior Jordan Smith delivered another impressive effort, scoring four times and assisting twice.  Senior co-captain Sam Pulliam added four goals as well.  Artie Shaw had his best night of the year, contributing three goals and two assists.  Finally, James Hewell added two goals.  Wood Britton filled in admirably for regular goalie Bolton Smith while John Showfety made his first varsity appearance after taking all the shots in the afternoon’s first game,  a JV win over Christ School.      

Furies Lacrosse Takes Ravenscroft (4/13)

The Fury varsity lacrosse team travelled to Raleigh where they beat the Ravenscroft Ravens on Tuesday for a key NCISAA win.  The final score of the game was 9-4.  Anchored by a stellar ten-save effort from Bolton Smith, the Furies distributed the ball and saw lots of scoring.  Sam Pulliam recorded a  hat trick and also added three assists.  Jordan Smith also scored three times, playing up on offense and back as a defender.   Jordan Martin, James Hewell, and Michael Swinson each added a  goals as well contributing to a great team effort.  Team captain Artie Shaw added an assist as did freshman Tripp Showfety, playing in his first varsity contest.  The Furies will face Christ School at home on Smith Field this Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Furies Lacrosse Hosts Battle of the Borders (4/10)

FCDS hosted the “Battle of the Borders” lacrosse showcase this past weekend. FCDS faced Decatur and Walton High Schools, two talented teams from Georgia. The fourth team invited was Patrick Henry H.S., from Richmond, Virginia. The teams dueled under beautiful sunny skies on both Friday and Saturday afternoons. On Friday, FCDS faced Decatur and lost a hard fought contest by a final score of 7-5. Senior captains Sam Pulliam (four goals) and Jordan Smith led the scoring for FCDS and fellow senior Artie Shaw distributed the ball for some valuable assists. On Saturday, FCDS lost to Walton 15-5. Again, the two Fury captains led the offensive production along with James Hewell who added a great goal with a behind the net dodge. Goalkeeper Bolton Smith delivered his usual solid performance between the pipes for the Furies. He was backed up by Charlie McKinney and Wood Britton who each saw action on Saturday. Next up, FCDS has a key NCISAA game at Ravenscroft in Raleigh on Tuesday.

Durham Academy Over Furies Lacrosse (3/26)

The Fury varsity lacrosse team lost a hard fought contest to Durham Academy by the score of 8 to 5. Captain Jordan Smith notched two goals, beating a talented Durham goalie with two screaming "upper shelf" shots to the top of the net. Captain Sam Pulliam added another goal on a beautiful left handed shot. Junior Ben Coles continued his scoring streak, contributing two goals to the total. Both of those goals were in lots of traffic on the crease. Goalie Bolton Smith delivered his third impressive game in as many days. Finally, the defense was buoyed by the return of Stewart Sturkie who made several great clears and showed no ill effects from his earlier hand injury.

Furies Lacrosse Takes GDS (3/24)

The Fury varsity lacrosse team recorded an important conference win against Greensboro Day School yesterday. When the dust had settled, the Furies finished up victors by a score of 14-10. Captains Sam Pulliam and Jordan Smith each scored four goals while Jay Baughan and James Hewell recorded two each. Ben Coles and Michael Swinson rounded out the offensive barrage with one goal apiece. All three Fury goalies recorded saves including Wood Britton who was playing in his first varsity game. The Furies face perennial powerhouse Durham Academy at home Friday at 4 p.m.       

Fury Lacrosse Takes Cape Fear (3/19)

The Fury varsity lacrosse team took a hard-fought game from visiting Cape Fear Academy Friday night, winning by a score of 10-8. Captains Sam Pulliam and Jordan Smith led the way for FCDS with three and two goals respectively. There were also great contributions from Jordan Martin, who also scored two goals, and Ben Coles, Jay Baughan, and James Hewell with one goal apiece. Bolton Smith made many big saves and finished the game with fifteen official stops. Finally, Artie Shaw chipped in with an assist and timely, aggressive midfield defense late in the game. The Furies hustled to record forty-three ground balls and overcame an early two-goal deficit to earn this important conference win.

Cannon School Over Furies Lacrosse (3/12)

The Fury varsity lacrosse team lost a hard-fought game Friday at Cannon School that saw several lead changes. Jordan Smith delivered a hat trick with a three goal night and senior Sam Pulliam also added to his season goal total. Michael Swinson scored his first of the season while James Hewell added his second goal of his varsity career. The Furies take on Reynolds Tuesday at home in the opener of a great double-header. The finale that night is an NCAA Division 1 matchup featuring Bucknell and Jacksonville Universities.
