Furies Soccer Over Durham Academy (10/21)
The Fury varsity soccer team’s last home match of 2011 was one to remember. Friday’s NCISAA first round playoff win extended the Furies season for another week. With the 4-1 win over visiting Durham Academy, the Furies get the chance to travel to High Point to face high flying Wesleyan Academy in a 6 p.m., Tuesday affair. Come on out as the underdog Furies look to spring the upset.
In the Durham Academy match, Read Castor kept up his fine goal scoring form as he led the Furies with two tallies. Castor’s goals were sandwiched around a sterling strike from Brandon Chase and a quality Trip Showfety finish. Blake Byrne and Hami Ross shared the win in goal for the Furies. Seniors Max Dronne, Cole Carros, Steven Haderer, and Chase were able to finish their home careers with a fine playoff winning ovation from the vocal Fury contingent. Congratulations to these fine seniors.
Furies Soccer Over Calvary (10/17)
On a night filled with emotion and ceremony, the Fury varsity soccer team edged Calvary Baptist by a 1-0 score. Alex Requarth’s early second half stunner was all FCDS needed to win their final regular season match. Requarth made amends for an earlier post clanger with his cool finish of a Read Castor cross. Castor continued his fine run of offensive play and narrowly missed netting an insurance tally as his post-rattling, blast rang into the night. FCDS started seniors Max Dronne, Brandon Chase, Cole Carros, and Steven Haderer in their final home match as Furies. Prior to the match these outstanding young men were honored, along with managers Christina Kontos and Kylie Chase, in a recognition ceremony. They then went out and helped lead FCDS to its tenth win of the season. The Furies finish the regular season with a record of 10-8-1 and 4-4 in PACIS play. The Furies now await word on their potential state tournament seed which will be determined on Wednesday. First round tournament play will commence this weekend.
Furies Soccer Takes H-P Christian (10/13)
It was a good night for the Fury varsity soccer team as they got back into the win column, with a 4-1 victory over High Point Christian. Read Castor broke out tonight with a huge offensive game. Castor’s three goals were his most in a match as a Fury and sparked the offense for FCDS. Tripp Showfety added a fine finish late in the contest as the Furies cruised to victory. Steven Haderer and Jona Hover recorded assists for the Furies (9-8-1) . Twenty players contributed to the win as FCDS tuned up for the regular season finale, to be played on Monday at 6 p.m. against local, conference foe Calvary Baptist. Plan on coming out for this “Senior Night” match, as we honor our senior players and managers in a pre-game ceremony.
Busy Weekend for Furies Soccer (10/1)
It was a weekend of mixed results for FCDS soccer. Friday evening saw a well fought, overtime win at Calvary, with Saturday providing a game with many successes but an ultimate 5-2 defeat to a very talented Greensboro Day team. On Friday, the Furies controlled play and held a 32-7 advantage in shots taken but could not break through, at least not until the spectacular occurred. Chase Beason scored a dream goal for the overtime win. Beason’s fully extended, diving header was all the Furies needed. The header came off an 85th minute Alex Requarth corner kick and was blasted home from 14 yards out, past a sprawling Calvary keeper.
Beason scored another blast on Saturday as he and the Furies played the two-time defending state champions hard for 60 minutes. Beason’s free kick made the game 1-1 with Jonathan Hover (an honorary Beason brother) giving the Furies an early second half lead. However, GDS stepped up the pressure and the Furies faltered late for a 5-2 defeat.
Next up for FCDS is the conference away matches with Wesleyan (Tuesday) and Greensboro (Thursday). Next week sees home matches with High Point Christian and Calvary as the team continues its PACIS schedule.
Furies Soccer Takes High Point Christian (9/26)
An attacking lineup, led by Tripp Showfety and Read Castor, helped the Fury varsity soccer team create 30 attempts on the High Point Christian goal and lead the team onto eventual victory in High Point. The 3-1 win gives FCDS a 7-5-1 record with a 1-1 PACIS record. Showfety and Castor consistently created chances, with Castor drilling home the first for FCDS. The 20th minute strike looked to seal a comfortable win for FCDS but ease was not the norm. HPC stormed back to score on their only chance of the half. Were it not for an own goal right as first half time expired, things may have turned out differently. Kudos to Brandon Chase for pressuring the HPC defender to knock home Tanner Beason’s late half serve. The 2-1 halftime lead provided some breathing room for the Furies. Beason’s late game PK, after Alex Requarth was taken down in the box, made the match 3-1. The Furies pressured HPC and were on the offensive for most of the match, creating many chances and two PK opportunities. Next up is an away PACIS tilt on Friday at Calvary Baptist then the rescheduled home affair with Greensboro Day on Saturday evening at 6.
Furies Soccer Over Cary Academy (9/20)
Read Castor’s late game heroics earned the Fury varsity soccer team a big victory last night over Cary Academy. Castor’s 78th minute strike, off a fabulous penetrating ball from Tanner Beason. capped a see-saw affair. The teams were equally matched with either capable of snatching the win. The sluggish contest was played mostly between the 18 yard boxes, with chances few and far between. It only took a moment of glory however for FCDS to come out with the huge win. Once again, Cole Carros led a dogged defensive effort in front of victorious keeper Blake Byrne. Due to the team’s outstanding defensive play, Byrne had to do very little to earn the shutout. On Friday, Byrne and the boys will look to step up the intensity and effort as they play host to top side, Greensboro Day in a key PACIS match up. Come on out at 5:30 to support the boys as they face this stiff challenge.
Furies Soccer Zips Lexington High (9/19)
Steven Haderer’s first career goal highlighted the Furies’ 4-0 victory over visiting Lexington High. Read Castor added two goals with Alex Requarth tallying the initial, game winner, as FCDS returned to the win column. Blake Byrne and Hami Ross split the shutout for FCDS who now stand at 5-5-1. Today FCDS hosts Cary Academy at 6 p.m. when they look to continue with their winning ways. Come on out to support the Furies as they play this key, cross conference, NCISAA 3A match up.
Wesleyan Takes Furies Soccer (9/16)
On Friday evening, the Fury varsity soccer team hosted top ranked and undefeated Wesleyan Christian. True to their ranking and reputation, Wesleyan defeated a determined FCDS squad by a score of 4-0. Despite playing a tactically sound game, the Trojans were just too tough for the Furies. Blake Byrne played superbly in the FCDS goal and the defensive foursome of McNeer, Arrington, Seach, and Carros did well under constant pressure. The Furies look to rebound on Monday as they host Lexington H.S. at 6 p.m.
Furies Soccer Faces Tough Weekend (9/9, 10)
The Fury varsity soccer team had a tough challenge to meet with back to back games against quality opponents this weekend. The results were a mixed bag but displayed what the young team can accomplish. On Friday evening, in a spirited affair, the Furies earned a tie with a very physical Gaston Christian team. Twice trailing, the Furies came back to earn the 2-2 result. FCDS outshot Gaston by a 33-8 margin but balls wouldn't go in for the unlucky booters from FCDS. Tripp Showfety and Alex Reguarth each scored for FCDS with Read Castor garnering an assist and continuing his very fine run of recent play. Castor was dangerous throughout the match and was simply unlucky to not have scored.
Twenty four hours later, the Furies made the short hop to High Point to face Westchester Country Day. The Wildcats, top ranked in 2-A and the defending 2-A State Champions, were ready for the Furies and were looking for their first win over FCDS in 14 years. For Westchester, it was meant to be. Playing an attacking style and constantly having the Furies on their heels worked, as WCDS earned a hard fought 3-2 win over FCDS. Although Cole Carros and Noah Seach led a fine defensive effort, the pressure and some FCDS miscues led to the team’s demise. The Furies proved resilient as they twice cut into the deficit, the first time courtesy of Brandon Chase's fabulous finish. Chase's full volley was clinical in its precision. What a goal! The Furies' second made things tight as Tanner Beason whipped in a late match corner to make it 3-2. Alas, a victory for the Furies was not meant to be.
Furies Soccer Over NRC (8/30)
For the second time in a week, the Furies made the trek to Raleigh for a cross conference match up. This time, the Furies came home victorious, with a 1-0 win at North Raleigh Christian. Alex Requarth’s late second half penalty kick iced the game for FCDS, who outshot NRCA by a 25-12 margin. NRCA goalkeeper Alex Sloan kept NRCA in the match with his fine play but the Furies were not to be denied. Sporting their full lineup for the first time this season, the Furies clicked on all levels. Tripp Showfety, Requarth, and Tanner Beason were constant attacking threats, with Blake Byrne anchoring the back with solid play in the FCDS goal. The Furies record now stands at 4-2 with a big home match with Charlotte Country Day on tap for Friday at 4 p.m.
Furies Soccer Zips Hickory Grove (8/20)
The Furies made it two for two on Friday, with a 5-0 win over visiting Hickory Grove. Tanner Beason’s two goal effort helped pace the Furies, with Alex Requarth, Brandon Chase and Tripp Showfety also scoring for FCDS. Blake Byrne and Hami Ross shared the shutout in the FCDS goal. Up next is a tough week for the Furies as they make a Tuesday trek to Raleigh to play at Ravenscroft and then host the PMG FCDS Invitational on Friday and Saturday, when they will face Bishop McGuinness and Reynolds H.S. The Furies will also be without leading scorer, Tanner Beason, who will be training with Real Madrid in Madrid, Spain for the week. Tanner was identified this Summer as one of 40 players from North, South, and Central America who were invited to play and train at one of the most prestigious Football Clubs in the world. Beason departed on Saturday and will return next Sunday.
Furies Soccer Takes Charlotte Christian in Season Opener (8/16)
It was a fine start to the season as the FCDS varsity boys’ soccer team defeated Charlotte Christian School by a score of 4-0. Tripp Showfety paced the Furies’ attack with a goal and two assists. Brandon Chase added the first goal of 2011 with a late, first half effort, rewarding his hustle and high pressure. Tanner Beason opened the second stanza with a wonderful volley off a lay off from Showfety. Beason’s twenty yard blast smacked off one post before settling in behind the C.C. goalkeeper. Showfety then set up Read Castor with a perfectly weighted ball which Castor slammed home with a quality finish. Finally and as a reward for his efforts, Showfety scored to wrap up the night for the Furies. Blake Byrne earned the shutout in the FCDS goal.
Next up for the Furies is a home tilt on Friday at 5 p.m. against Hickory Grove.
