Greensboro Day Takes Furies Soccer in Last of Season (10/21)
The FCDS boys' soccer season ended this evening with convincing loss to Greensboro Day School. GDS, the # 2 seeded team in the NCISAA State Soccer Tournament, handled FCDS in every way in their 7-0 win. FCDS could not get going, falling behind early in the game, and they were never able to recover. It was a tough ending for the team and its seven senior team members. Alex Freeman, Kemo Gogic, Houston Armstrong, and Ben Davis, each first year varsity players, are to be commended for their fine senior seasons. Chase Morten, Dan Marks, and Jack Haus will each graduate as two-time state champions, and we are proud of all that they helped us to accomplish.
Furies Soccer 1-Ups Cannon in First Round (10/18)
The FCDS varsity boys soccer team, seeded # 10, traveled to Concord to face #7 seed, Cannon School, in the first round of the NCISAA State 3 – A Soccer Playoffs. In a hard fought battle, the Furies came home victorious with a 2-1 win over Cannon. In the passionate affair, which saw Cannon issued 8 yellow cards and FCDS 2, the Furies prevailed thanks to fine defending and a game winner from Ben White.
FCDS started the scoring at the 13 minute mark as Dan Marks blasted home a one timer from 20 yards out. Minutes later, two Wes Butler free kicks came tantalizingly close to increasing the lead. However, luck was not with FCDS on those serves. Ben White then hit the cross bar as the Furies pressed the attack. Cannon was very dangerous in their own right. They combined well up top, which eventually led to the equalizer at the 31 minute mark. At the half, the score was tied at 1-1.
The second half got a bit chippy as the teams traded fouls and goal scoring chances. FCDS continued to pressure with Chase Morten and Chase Troxell. In the 60th minute, Ben White received a cross, juked 2 defenders and calmly slotted home the go ahead goal. After the goal, the Furies got too defensive and Cannon took advantage. However, Butler, Jack Haus, Justin Hess, Alex Freeman, and ‘keeper Michael Burton held firm and preserved the match for the Furies.
The two time defending state champion, Furies have now won 7 straight playoff matches dating back to the opening round of 2006, and will travel to Greensboro Day on Tuesday to face the # 2 seeded Bengals of GDS. GDS has defeated FCDS twice this season, most recently on Tuesday with a 2-1 double overtime win. Game time on Tuesday will be at 5:00 p.m.

Greensboro 1-Ups Furies Soccer (10/14)
On a beautiful evening for soccer, the Furies celebrated their 7 senior players by playing an exciting match with # 3 ranked Greensboro Day School. Unfortunately for FCDS, GDS triumphed in overtime by a score of 2-1. GDS’ Robbie Kelly scored both GDS goals from long range. After a scoreless regulation, GDS got on the board at the 83:40 mark. The goal could have sunk FCDS but the Furies responded with a goal late in the first overtime. Wes Butler drove a long free kick into the box where Kemo Gogic headed it home. However, with just minutes to play, Kelly hit another 25-yard shot past the FCDS keeper to seal the win. The Furies played well but were again done in by costly miscues. The Furies now hold their breath to see if they will be selected for the 2008 state playoffs.
Trojans Take Furies Soccer (10/10)
The Furies lost a tough battle at Wesleyan, this evening, by a score of 2-0. The Furies and Trojans each took 9 shots and each had 2 corner kicks. Wesleyan scored a goal in each half as they swept FCDS for the season. Chase Morten led a spirited effort by the boys, which saw Charles Spry return to action with a cast on his broken arm. Jack Haus and Justin Hess did a fine job organizing the FCDS backs, limiting the dangerous WCA attack to mostly long distance shots. The Furies return to action on Tuesday evening at 5:30 against Greensboro Day. Prior to the match, we will honor our 7 seniors and their families. Please come out to join us on this special evening.
Charlotte Latin Takes Furies Soccer (10/7)
Top ranked Charlotte Latin showed why they are NC’s Number 1 side with a resounding 5-0 defeat of The Furies. Despite playing pretty well, the Furies committed a handful of key errors, which were pounced on by the talented Latin side. FCDS played very well in the first half and oftentimes controlled the middle of the field. Dan Marks, Kemo Gogic and Charles Spry played very well, despite high pressure from the Hawks. Unfortunately, two first half errors doomed the Furies. Despite the setbacks, the boys learned from their opponent and will try to put the lesson to use on Friday at Wesleyan.
Furies Soccer Over High Point Christian (10/4)
The Furies continued their recent run of fine play with a 2-0 win over visiting High Point Christian. HPC came into tonight’s match as the 6th ranked team in the North Carolina Soccer Coaches poll, boasting an 11-2-1 record. FCDS was ready for the quality opponent and played, arguably, their finest match of the season. The Furies took 19 shots to HPC’s 7 and were never truly tested by HPC.
Jack Haus appeared to have scored the game’s first goal, only to have it waved off by a late assist from the assistant referee. Undaunted by this setback, the Furies kept up the pressure. The boys had to wait until the 45 minute mark to see the dead lock broken. Chase Morten finished off a rebound of a saved Charles Spry shot. Morten, playing his finest match of the season, was everywhere, creating many fine chances for himself and others. He also assisted on the Furies’ final tally as he combined with Spry on a short corner kick and then found Kemo Gogic open in the box. Gogic deftly received the ball and slammed the all important second goal at the 77th minute.
Jack Haus orchestrated a fine defensive effort, teaming with Justin Hess, Alex Freeman and Wes Butler to easily control the HPC attack. Michael Burton went the distance in goal for the win. The Furies will now travel to Charlotte for an important tilt with Charlotte Latin. Game time will be Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

Greensboro Day Over Furies Soccer (9/29)
The Furies’ struggles continued as they lost this afternoon 3-1 at Greensboro Day. The top ranked GDS Bengals used 3 first half goals to deflate the Furies. However, the Furies rallied for a better second half. Chase Troxell knocked home an Alex Freeman cross for the Furies only goal. Michael Burton kept the score sheet clean with his second half play. FCDS is back in action with a crucial Wednesday tilt with visiting Ravenscroft.
Trojans Take Furies Soccer (9/23)
It was a tough night for the Furies as the Wesleyan Trojans dominated every aspect of tonight’s match. Although the Furies hung tough and played better in the second half, Wesleyan used 2 goals, in each half, to earn a 4-0 win. Wesleyan took advantage of their 9 shots while FCDS was unable to capitalize on some fine chances. The Furies hope to regroup on Thursday as they travel to Greensboro to face Greensboro Day School at 6:00 p.m.
Furies Soccer Ties Cary (9/20)
For most of today’s match at Cary Academy, the Furies were the more dangerous team. However, that doesn’t always equal victory. Today, the boys settled for a 2-2 tie with the Chargers, despite outshooting Cary 16-4. Ben White tallied both goals for FCDS, the first off a feed from Chase Troxell, the second from Chase Morten. Cary was granted a free kick in first half stoppage time, resulting in a goal and the second goal was from a crazy bounce in the FCDS box. James Williams was rarely tested in the FCDS goal. With the tie, the Furies have now tied all three of their TISAC foes. FCDS will be back in action on Tuesday as they host 3rd ranked Wesleyan at 7:15.
Furies Soccer Ties with Covenant Day (9/18)
Tonight’s match with 5th ranked Covenant Day was played with playoff fervor!
Tonight at Rea Stadium, the Furies and Covenant Day tied at 3-3. The game could have swung in either team's way and was an outstanding game to watch. FCDS opened the scoring at the 19 minute mark as Dan Marks drilled home a low shot after a fine feed from Chase Morten. Covenant then responded with 3 unanswered goals to take a 3-1 half time lead. Going into the half, the Furies were reeling. However, they came out as a different team and attacked at will for 20 minutes. Morten was a constant threat on the outside and caused all sorts of problems. Seven minutes into the half, Morten got in behind the defense and crossed to Kemo Gogic. Gogic, without a shot to take, found Charles Spry who slammed home from 18 yards. Then, 3 minutes later, Morten turned a 360 spin move into the CD box and let fire. The shot found the side netting a had tied the match.
The remaining 20 minutes of the match saw each team attack via different methods. CD used effective counter attacks to cause problems for the FCDS defense, while the Furies attacked through their wide players. Wes Butler, Ben White, Houston Armstrong, and Alex Freeman all created chances for the Furies. Justin Hess and Jack Haus played inspired matches in the Furies’ defense.
The Furies will travel to Cary Academy on Saturday for the rescheduled match from Tuesday.

Furies Soccer Zips Calvary (9/15)
The Fury boys started their difficult week with a bang. Playing their best soccer of the season, the Furies defeated local rival Calvary Baptist by a score of 5-0. FCDS was able to play 22 players in the match and give their starters an early week rest while gaining valuable experience for the younger players.
Chase Morten led the Furies with 2 tallies, the second off a masterful run, beating 4 defenders, before smashing the ball home. Charles Spry added a goal and two assists. Wes Butler and Dan Marks each also scored for the Furies. Michael Burton and James Williams shared the win in the FCDS net. If not for outstanding Calvary goalkeeping, the score surely would have been greater as Dan Marks, Chase Troxell and others had many chances.
The Furies have now won three games running, with an important tilt at Cary Academy on Tuesday. The boys will also host Covenant Day on Thursday.

Furies Soccer Over Village Christian (9/12)
This evening the Furies put another mark in the victory column with a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Village Christian. The Furies controlled the match in every facet but, it was not until Wes Butler scored a second half goal that the Furies secured the well deserved victory. Village came into the match ranked 6th in the NCSCA State Soccer poll.
The Furies’ goal came off a fine short corner kick from Charles Spry. Butler slammed home the first timer with 20 minutes to play. Butler’s was just one of a host of great chances for FCDS. For the game, FCDS outshot Village 24 – 5, and earned 7 corner kicks to Village’s 2. Michael Burton earned his second straight win for the Furies. Justin Hess organized an outstanding defensive effort and was aided by fine play from Butler, Alex Freeman and Jack Haus.

Furies Soccer Takes Christ School (9/11)
The Furies got back to their winning ways today with a 2-1 win over Christ School in Asheville. The Furies played well for the entire match but it wasn’t until Wes Butler’s 45th minute strike that things finally started to go FCDS’ way. Houston Armstrong then ran onto a great Chase Morten feed for the second goal. Despite giving up a late goal, the Furies’ defense, led by Justin Hess, Alex Freeman, Butler, Jack Haus, and Kwame Seymour played its best match of the season. Michael Burton earned the win in the net. The Furies turn right around and host Village Christian on Friday evening. Village enters the tilt as the 6th ranked team in North Carolina independent school play and will provide a tough test for the Furies.

Furies Soccer Ties Durham 1-1 (9/3)
The varsity boys' soccer team traveled to Durham Academy on Wednesday evening, expecting a battle. The game did not disappoint. The Furies, coming off a tough Tuesday evening tilt at RJR made the trip to Durham somewhat deflated. The boys did well in the early stages of the DA match, with the majority of play and chances being created by the visitors. However, the needed punch to score was lacking. The halftime score of 0-0 was a fair assessment of the nature of the early play. Just minutes into the second half, DA scored off a corner kick header. This goal could have dealt a blow to FCDS’ hopes. Instead it motivated the boys to attack harder. This renewed focus led to a 70th minute goal from Kemo Gogic. Gogic slammed home a Wes Butler serve to tie the match and give the Furies a well deserved result. James Williams and Michael Burton shared time in the nets for the Furies and Justin Hess, moving to central defender gave the Furies a much needed spark.
Reynolds Over Furies Soccer (9/2)
The FCDS varsity boys' soccer team played another tough match this evening, with host, 4-A public foe, RJ Reynolds coming out victorious. The Furies suffered an early let down as RJR headed home a flank serve just minutes into the match. The early goal sparked the Furies into attacking for the next 60 minutes. Wes Butler and Dan Marks each had chances but poor services hindered their efforts. The Furies continued attacking with Chase Morten and Ben White, supported by Justin Hess, Charles Spry, and Kemo Gogic. Unfortunately, a goal was not to come. In the 67th minute, another FCDS breakdown led to a second RJR goal with a third coming from a blast late game.
For the game, the Furies hung with the Demons, taking 10 shots to RJR’s 11. Keepers Michael Burton and James Williams played confidently in the nets for the Furies, who will travel to Durham for a match against Durham Academy on Wednesday.
Furies Soccer Ties North Raleigh (8/28)
In a rematch of the 2007 state championship match, FCDS and North Raleigh renewed their spirited rivalry. Tonight’s game at FCDS’ Rea Stadium ended in a thrilling 3-3 tie. North Raleigh, top ranked in NCISAA 3-A soccer, came to FCDS with an unblemished 3-0 record while the Furies have struggled to find their way at 1-2. NRCA started off fast as Eric Walls split the FCDS defense to score an early break-away goal at the 4 minute mark. Later in the half, FCDS’ Chase Morten got the Furies on the board after a 50 yard ball from Wes Butler found him behind the Knights defense. Morten rocketed a blast from 18 yards, easily beating the NRCA keeper. However, just minutes later, NRCA struck again. Once again, NRCA used a fast counter attack to spring an attacker in on the FCDS goal. Despite a fine effort to recover, the FCDS defense was beaten. NRCA closed the first half scoring off an FCDS corner kick miscue. Going in down 3-1 at half might seem daunting, however last year at NRCA, the Furies had the same half time deficit only to tie the match in a thrilling fashion.
The same can be said about this season.
In the second half, the Furies dominated, out-shooting NRCA 10-3 in the half. Chase Morten constantly wreaked havoc with the NRCA defenders, drawing as many as three of them at any given time. Every FCDS player stepped up his level of play and it paid off in the 68th minute when Ben White headed home Alex Freeman’s cross to tighten the match. With 4 minutes left in the match, Charles Spry served a ball across the NRCA goal, which was met by Dan Marks’ game tying effort. The last 4 minutes saw the Furies flying all over and creating many chances, with Wes Butler, Spry, White, and Morten all getting great looks at the goal.
The Furies record now stands at 1-2-1 with tough matches next week at Reynolds and Durham Academy before coming home next Friday.
Page Takes Forsyth Intivational (8/23)
The Furies fought a tough battle this evening but lost out to a very strong Page HS team. The final score of 3-1 gives Page the championship of The Forsyth Invitational Soccer Tournament.
The Furies started strong and played a splendid first half. Houston Armstrong finished a fine solo effort to give FCDS the early 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Ben White just missed a diving header attempt off a Wes Butler serve. Unfortunately, the FCDS defense was beaten late in the half and surrendered a vital first half goal. Page stormed out and controlled the second stanza, scoring 2 second half goals for the win. There was never any quit in FCDS though and Ben White and Chase Morten each had golden chances against the stout Page defense. Charles Spry was everywhere, fighting for each ball and always playing to win.
The Furies, whose record drops to 1-2, travel to Charlotte on Tuesday to face Providence Day in a key NCISAA 3-A match up.
In the 3rd place match of the tournament, Fayetteville Christian scored three goals and held off Charlotte Christian for a 3-2 victory.

Furies Soccer Hands Opening to Charlotte Christian (8/19)
The 2008 edition of FCDS Boys Soccer got off to a rocky start this evening, with a 3-0 loss at Charlotte Christian. The Furies, sluggish from the start, spotted the Knights an early 3-0 lead in the first half. Despite the problems, FCDS generated some fine chances and were only out shot 11-6 for the half. After some half time reorganization, things improved greatly for FCDS. Even though, the Furies went scoreless, the team amped up the pressure and outshot CCS 11-2 for the half. Kemo Gogic, Charles Spry and Dan Marks organized the middle, allowing Chase Morten to get more involved in the attack, generating some fine chances. The boys created 7/8 quality scoring chances and were a much better side in the half.
Next up for FCDS is Fayetteville Christian in the Furies Invitational Soccer Tournament on Friday after Charlotte Christian plays Page High School. Come on out and support the Furies as they rebound from today’s early season defeat.
