Furies Soccer Advances to Semi Finals (10/27)
The FCDS boys’ soccer team advanced to the NCISAA State Semi Finals with a thrilling 3-2 win over Wesleyan Academy, in a downpour on Tuesday night. The trip to the semi finals is FCDS’s third in the last four seasons.
FCDS started off in fine fashion, scoring two huge goals in the game’s first five minutes. Chase Troxell smashed home a Warren Marshall offering just two minutes into the match. Troxell ran onto the short corner and scored from eight yards out. Just minutes later, Kris Dixon rose above the fray to gently knock in FCDS’ second goal. Dixon, unlike Troxell, did not slam the ball home. He simply outworked those around him to chest in the second. Wesleyan replied with a late first half tally but FCDS went into the dry locker room with a 2-1 lead. FCDS could have had an early third when Wes Butler’s 35 yard free kick pinged off the post. Another FCDS flank serve appeared to have gone in the net, only to be ruled as a corner kick for the Furies.
The second half saw Wesleyan and the conditions attack FCDS. In a match long, driving rain, Wesleyan dominated possession. Warren Marshall and Marko Mandalinic controlled the FCDS defensive end of play however with Jake Currie, Tripp Showfety, and Parker Lee also playing inspired fashion. Mandalinic turned in his finest hour as he repeatedly repelled attack after Wesleyan attack.
The FCDS third resulted from perfect execution of a set piece. Warren Marshall and Wes Butler stood over a 35 yard free kick. Butler peeled off and received a perfect ball from Marshall. Butler drove to the end line and drilled a cross through the Wesleyan goal mouth. Kwame Seymour bested everyone getting to the ball. His sliding effort upped the tally to three for FCDS.
The last minutes were harrowing as Wesleyan pushed everyone into the attack. After surrendering a Wesleyan second however, the Furies held on for the win.
The win puts FCDS, the number four seed, into the state semi-finals against number one seed, Charlotte Latin. The 5 PM Friday match will be played at North Raleigh Christian.
Furies Soccer Shuts Out Charlotte Christian (10/20)
It was a great night for FCDS soccer and a fitting tribute to our five outstanding senior players. On a beautiful night, filled with ceremony and emotion, the Furies defeated the Knights of Charlotte Christian by a score of 3-0. The win gives the Furies a final regular season record of 17-6 as they now await word from the NCISAA State Tournament seeding committee.
Senior Michael Burton led the FCDS charge as he scored in the game's fourth minute. Burton's header eluded the CC keeper and rolled into the net for the early FCDS lead. It looked as if the Furies were off and running but the Knights defense combined with some errant FCDS shooting kept the match close at the half. Early on in the second half, Christian got some energy and made a game of it however Warren Marshall, Tripp Showfety, Parker Lee and Jake Currie held strong in front of Senior keeper Marko Mandalinic. Senior Kris Dixon and Justin Hess controlled the midfield for FCDS. Late in the match Read Castor and Wes Butler combined for two valuable insurance goals with Butler adding both to his season total of 27 goals.
Seniors Kwame Seymour and Chase Troxell created many chances and helped to insure the outcome for the Furies.
Thank you to our Seniors for all that they have done for us and we wish them all the best in the playoffs and throughout their futures.
Furies Soccer (Finally) Defeats Christ School (10/16)
In what might be the longest match in FCDS soccer history, the Furies defeated Christ School by a score of 5-0. The match, played over a two month span thanks to lightning at FCDS, ended yesterday afternoon in a cold affair at Christ School. Wes Butler had given FCDS a 2-0 lead back in early September and added his third minutes into the replay. Kwame Seymour then tallied his first of the season with fellow senior Michael Burton adding the game's fifth marker. The Furies will again play in Asheville on Saturday, as they take on Asheville School. The Furies' season record now stands at 15 - 6.
The regular season finale will be played Tuesday at home versus Charlotte Christian. Prior to the match, we will honor our five seniors. Come join us as we thank Michael Burton, Chase Troxell, Kris Dixon, Kwame Seymou,r and Marko Mandalinic in a pre-game ceremony.
Furies Soccer Takes Ravenscroft (10/14)
The Fury varsity soccer team recorded another big win on a rainy day in Raleigh, as they defeated Ravenscroft by a score of 3-1. FCDS, following up on their huge 1-0 win last Friday at Wesleyan, came out like the weather - dreary. Ravenscroft scored first, midway through the first half. The goal came very much against the run of play, as FCDS outshot the Ravens 7-1 for the half. The second half was a different story. Jamaal London led the FCDS attack with 2 goals and assisted on Wes Butler’s clincher. London has now scored game winners in two straight matches, having scored the decider at Wesleyan.
The Furies now travel to Asheville for the weekend and will look to finish their rain shortened affair with Christ School on Friday. The Furies will look to build on their 2-0 first half lead when that game resumes. On Saturday the Furies will travel across town to take on Asheville School in a 2:00 p.m. tilt.
Greensboro Day Takes Furies Soccer (10/6)
Tuesday night, in an emotional battle, the gallant FCDS Furies dropped a match to Greensboro Day. The Furies hung with GDS for 39 minutes until a GDS 20-yard bomb broke the ice. GDS added two late tallies to solidify their spot near the top of the NCISAA rankings. Warren Marshal led a valiant FCDS defensive effort. Next up for FCDS is a Friday rematch with Wesleyan. The 7 p.m. tilt will be played at Wesleyan Christian Academy. The Furies season record now stands at 12 and 6.
Furies Soccer 1-Ups Providence Day (9/29)
It was a great night for soccer and a great night for the Furies as they defeated Providence Day by a score of 1-0. The win is FCDS’ third consecutive 1-0 victory. Wes Butler scored a cracker at the 31 minute mark, giving FCDS all they would need. Running onto a Chase Troxell through ball, Butler placed the ball on his right and blasted it home, off the far post, from 20 yards. Butler and Michael Burton each had glorious chances to up the ante but their shots blew past the intended target. In the second half, it was more of the same as Jamaal London, Justin Hess and others had chances but did not capitalize. Defenders Daniel Herzberg, Parker Lee, Tripp Showfety and Jake Currie played very solidly in front of Marko Mandalinic. The win gives the Furies a record of 12-5.

Furies Soccer Over Village Christian (9/26)
The Furies made the long trip to Fayetteville, on a Saturday, in the rain, and came home with a 1-0 victory. The match against Village Christian was a tight affair, with the Furies dominating the statistics. However, a suspect pitch, on a small field, allowed for limited flow of play. Thus, the match became a scrappy affair, and not a pretty one at that. Jamaal London finally broke through for FCDS in the 48th minute, blasting home a 20-yard shot from Wes Butler. London’s goal held up as Village Christian had very few opportunities. London’s all-around play was key as FCDS earned their 11th win on the season. Marko Mandalinic recorded the shutout in the FCDS goal. Next up for FCDS is a home tilt with Providence Day on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
Many thanks to all our parents who provided wonderful breakfasts and lunches. We always appreciate your support.

Furies Soccer Takes RJR (9/24)
The Fury varsity soccer team bested RJ Reynolds on Thursday night by a score of 1 - 0. Wes Butler's 57th minute penalty kick was all FCDS needed to defeat Reynolds. The win was FCDS' 10th of the season and second over Reynolds, the first being 4-1 in the WSFCS Soccer Spectacular. Butler's penalty was given after he ran onto a great Tripp Showfety through pass, eluded the RJR keeper, who then took Butler down in the penalty area. Butler blasted home his 22nd goal of the season. Reynolds pressed on and threatened the entire match but they couldn’t beat goal keeper Marko Mandalinic who was at his finest in the FCDS goal. Defenders Showfety, Blake Byrne, Kwame Seymour, Daniel Herzberg, Jake Currie and Parker Lee alternately frustrated the Demons. FCDS battled injuries late in the match causing Warren Marshall to drop back in a defensive role. Marshall's play helped seal the win for FCDS.

Wesleyan Christian Takes Furies Soccer (9/22)
A late first half miscue caused the Furies to drop a Tuesday contest with Wesleyan Christian Academy. Despite a strong defensive effort and fine play from the midfield, FCDS dropped its fourth game in its last five played. Marko Mandalinic faced only eight shots but the FCDS offense never created a chance against Wesleyan. The loss drops FCDS to 9-5 with a huge Thursday matchup on the horizon. On Thursday FCDS hosts Reynolds HS, who will look to avenge an early season, 4-1 loss to the Furies.
Furies Soccer Over Cary Academy (9/17)
The FCDS Furies got back to winning tonight, as they bested Cary Academy by a 4-1 score. Wes Butler’s two goals and two assists paced FCDS while Tripp Showfety added assists on both Butler goals. Jamaal London tallied FCDS’ first goal off a great Butler through ball. London walked in on goal to slot home his goal. Freshman Chase Beason scored his first career goal with an early second half blast. Butler added the assist on that goal as well. The fine defensive effort was led by Jake Currie, Daniel Herzberg, Showfety, Parker Lee and Blake Byrne. Marko Mandalinic earned the win for FCDS, with his 9th keeper win of the season. Next up for FCDS is conference foe Wesleyan Academy.

Charlotte Latin Takes Furies Soccer (9/15)
The varsity boys' struggles continued this evening, as Charlotte Latin defeated the Furies by a score of 4-0. The loss is FCDS' 3rd in their last four matches. The Furies played better today, with Marko Mandalinic playing strong in the FCDS goal. The Furies look to get back on track when they host Cary Academy on Thursday afternoon.
Furies Soccer Takes Forsyth Home Ed (9/9)
The FCDS Furies got back on track tonight as four FCDS players scored their first career goals. The four goals were enough as FCDS defeated the FHE Hawks by a score of 4-2. The Furies started slowly, still feeling the effects of last night’s loss. The team was also missing two starters, Chase Troxell and Ben White who were out with illnesses. Despite getting out to a 1--0 lead, courtesy of Warren Marshall's first minute goal, the Furies went into halftime trailing 2-1 as their makeshift lineup took some time to gel. When it did, the game was never in question.
In the second stanza, Parker Lee, Michael Burton and Tripp Showfety each scored big goals to seal the eighth win of the season for the Furies. Wes Butler and Jamaal London each tallied two assists. Marko Mandalinic and Steven Haderer shared the win in the FCDS goal.
FCDS now awaits conference foe Greensboro Day, who travel to FCDS for a Friday evening affair.

Charlotte Country Day Takes Furies Soccer (9/8)
The varsity boys’ soccer team suffered a tough defeat Tuesday afternoon. The 3-2 score was closer than the actual contest, which saw Charlotte Country Day thoroughly outplay FCDS for 60 minutes. Faced with a 3-0 deficit, FCDS roared back with two goals from Wes Butler. The first goal came after a great serve from Jamaal London found Wes alone out wide. His blast gave the Furies some life and, just a minute later, Warren Marshall received a similar serve, only to be fouled in the penalty area. Butler calmly slotted the ensuing penalty kick. Alas, the Fury victory was not to be as Parker Lee, Jamaal London and others could not convert game tying chances in the box. The Furies now hope to rebound with a Wednesday evening home tilt with FHE.

Furies Soccer Takes North Raleigh Christian (9/1)
The Fury soccer team went on the road today to play traditional nemesis, North Raleigh Christian Academy. True to recent form, the game was a shootout, with FCDS coming out on top 5-3. It was the third game between these two teams in the last three years in which at least eight goals were scored. This time, the Furies started early, taking a 1-0 lead on a Wes Butler blast from 20 yards out. That opening salvo was just a sign of things to come, as Butler scored three goals in the match. Kris Dixon and Jamaal London each added tallies for the now 7-1 Furies. NRCA tested the FCDS defense but Marko Mandalinic held up his end of the field for his 7th win. Chase Troxell, Parker Lee and Michael Burton assisted on each of Butler’s goals. Ben White, Warren Marshall and Justin Hess also gave fine efforts in helping seal the win.
The Furies now have a week to recover as they travel next Tuesday to face Charlotte Country Day in Charlotte.

Furies Soccer Over RJR (8/25)
In the consolation game of the WSFCS Soccer Spectacular, the FCDS Furies, seeded #6 in the tournament, defeated the # 1 seeded team, R.J. Reynolds H.S., by a score of 4-1. The Furies rebounded from a tough semi-final loss and defeated the cross town rival Demons of RJR. Wes Butler continued his fine run of play by scoring each of FCDS’ four goals. Butler’s first came from a 20th minute feed from Jamaal London and gave FCDS a 1-0 half-time lead. Early in the second half, fate turned against FCDS when an own goal was scored but the Furies avoided a potential meltdown and instead found more inspiration for the team and especially for Butler. Two free kick goals by Butler in a two minute span sealed the win with and he later scored his fourth on a blast from 20 yards.
Marko Mandalinic played flawlessly in the goal and the back four of Jake Currie, Kwame Seymour, Parker Lee and Tripp Showfety helped keep the Demons away from the goal. The win was the 6th for FCDS against just one loss on the season, and ends a streak of seven games in nine days. Next up is a home tilt with Christ School on Friday at 5:30.

East Forsyth Takes Furies Soccer (8/24)
The Furies’ great season hit a bump in the road today, as East Forsyth scored four second half goals for a decisive 4-0 win. The Furies slogged through the first half, creating a few quality chances only to see them rebuffed by East. Late in the half (in fact as the buzzer sounded), FCDS looked to have scored. However, Ben White’s header was ruled to have entered the goal after time expired. That was as close as the tired Furies would come to scoring in the game. East, despite being outshot for the game, managed to score all four goals in a 20 minute second half span. The loss leaves FCDs with a 5-1 record, with a consolation match to be played versus either West Forsyth or Reynolds. Game time will be Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. and the game will be played at West Forsyth.
FCDS Soccer Classic (8/21-22)
It was a great night for FCDS soccer as the varsity boys’ team improved to 5-0 on the young season. This evening, in the night cap of the Forsyth Country Day Soccer Classic, the Furies defeated Bishop McGuinness by a score of 5-2. Despite being down early, 1-0 and 2-1, FCDS rallied behind goals from Jamaal London, Ben White, Chase Troxell and Wes Butler (2). Butler’s two goals were in addition to his record tying, six goal performance last night, giving him eight goals for the two game tournament. For his efforts, Butler will be featured as a WXII Flow Athlete of The Week, in an upcoming television segment. Parker Lee and Butler each added assists for the still undefeated Furies. Warren Marshall and Justin Hess continued their fine all around play as well for the Furies.
Jake Currie, Kwame Seymour, Parker Lee and Tripp Showfety again played solid in front of Marko Mandalinic, who earned his fifth straight win.
Next up for FCDS will be East Forsyth in the Semi Finals of The Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools Soccer Spectacular.

WES BUTLER TIES 31 YEAR OLD SCORING RECORD
Forsyth Country Day School Midfielder, Wes Butler, scored 6 goals in tonight’s win against Carlisle School. Butler’s 6 goals ties the mark set in 1978 by then All American Tim Cooper (’79). Butler led FCDS to a 6-1 win over Carlisle School in the second match of The Forsyth Country Day Soccer Classic. In the first match, Mt Tabor came from behind to defeat Bishop McGuinness by a score of 2-1.
In the night cap, FCDS raced to a 5-0 lead at the half, all on Butler goals. Another Butler tally early in the second sealed the win for the now 4 – 0 Furies. Warren Marshall added 2 assists for FCDS with Jamaal London and Parker Lee also helping with assists. Marko Mandalinic and Steven Haderer shared the shutout in the FCDS goal.

Furies Soccer Zips Durham Academy (8/19)
The FCDS Furies won their second varsity soccer match in as many days, this time with a convincing 3-0 win over visiting Durham Academy. DA entered today’s contest with a record of 2-0-1 but could not withstand the consistent FCDS attack. Jamaal London and Ben White each tallied first half goals as FCDS kept DA from ever mounting any serious attack. London added his second goal after a long lightning delay. White, Chase Troxell and Justin Hess added assists on the goals. Due to the strong team defense, Fury goal keeper Marko Mandalinic was never truly tested in earning his second clean sheet of the season.
FCDS now takes their undefeated record into more tournament play this coming weekend. On Friday, in the FCDS Soccer Classic, the Furies play host to Carlisle School of Virginia. The 8:00 p.m. start will follow a match between Mt. Tabor and Bishop McGuinness at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Furies will host Bishop. All games are presented by The FCDS Fury Club and will be played in Rea Soccer Stadium.

Soccer Spectacular (8/18)
The 2009 edition of FCDS Soccer got off to a great start this evening.
In a second round match in the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County Schools Soccer Spectacular, FCDS defeated #5 seed Mt. Tabor. FCDS, the #6 seed, beat Tabor by a 2-0 score. Ben White and Justin Hess scored first half goals for the Furies. White knocked home a rebound of a Wes Butler flying side volley for the first goal of 2009. Hess neatly chipped a shot past the Tabor keeper later in the half to give FCDS the 2-0 lead. If not for some spectacular play from Mt Tabor’s keeper Ben Sollenberger in goal, the lead could have been much greater. FCDS keeper Marko Mandalinic played well throughout the match making several key saves early on and making another fine save late in the game to preserve the shutout.
The FCDS defense was solid as Kwame Seymour, Jake Currie, Parker Lee and Freshman, Tripp Showfety limited Tabor’s quality of chances. Seymour, stepping in for the injured Kris Dixon, was especially effective with his athletic play. Wes Butler, Warren Marshall and Justin Hess played very well in the middle with Jamaal London creating many fine opportunities up front.
The Furies turn right around and play again on Wednesday as they entertain Durham Academy at 5:00 p.m. at home. With today’s win, FCDS advances to the semi finals of The Soccer Spec and will play next Monday against the winner of East Forsyth against North Forsyth.
