Wesleyan Squeaks Past Furies Soccer (5/10)
On Saturday evening the girls' varsity soccer team played their final game of the season in the first round of the state playoffs. The girls showed their passion and determination battling Wesleyan to a 0-0 draw. The game was still tied after four overtime periods. In the end Wesleyan advanced in the penalty-kick shootout. The Furies were led by their captains Kalen Rearden, Reilly Townsend, Cameron Herndon, and Alex Hunt. The Furies were very strong in the back, limiting the Trojans to few opportunities. FCDS applied pressure creating several dangerous changes. However, Wesleyan was able to hang on until the shootout.
Furies Soccer Zips Wesleyan on Senior Night (5/5)
On Monday night the varsity girls' soccer team recognized the contributions and accomplishments of Kalen Rearden and Reilly Townsend before their last regular season game against Wesleyan. The Furies played with passion as they defeated Trojans 1-0 in front of a spirited home crowd. Senior captains Kalen Rearden and Reilly Townsend helped control the midfield. FCDS had great performances from several other players as well. Goalkeeper Ivy Cocklereece was strong in net. Junior captains Cameron Herndon and Alex Hunt provided leadership in the defense while helping start the Furies' attack.
The first half ended tied at zero. In the second half Wesleyan pressured the Furies' goal. Then forward Laine Herndon put FCDS ahead on a brilliant individual effort, blowing by several defenders before slotting a far-post goal. The defense held to send the seniors out on a winning note. Thank you Reilly and Kalen!
Furies Soccer Takes Charlotte Chirstian (5/2)
Last night the Forsyth girls' soccer team defeated Charlotte Christian 4-1. After conceding the first goal the Furies dominated the last 60 minutes of the match. In the 20th minute senior Reilly Townsend headed in the equalizer off of a corner-kick from Alex Hunt. Later in the first half Li Rusterholtz scored the go-ahead goal with a great finish from a cross from the right flank. The second half was completely controlled by the Furies. Forsyth scored two more times with goals by forwards Meredith Ingle and Laine Herndon. The Furies out-shot Charlotte Christian seventeen to three. The FCDS girls soccer team will celebrate Senior Night on Monday. Please join us in recognizing the contributions Kalen Rearden and Reilly Townsend. The fun will begin at 4:50 p.m.
Greensboro Day Over Furies Soccer (4/29)
The Forsyth Country Day girls’ soccer team fell to Greensboro Day Tuesday by a final score of 3-0. The first half saw both teams battling for midfield control. Although hard-fought, the half ended tied at zero. In the second half the Bengals tallied three, two off of set pieces and the final one off of a counter, as FCDS was pushing forward. In the end the Furies outshot Greensboro day, but were unable to find the net. The next game for the girls will be played Friday at Taylor Field. Kick-off is at 5 p.m.
Varsity Soccer Takes Wesleyan (4/25)
Last night the girls' soccer team showed tremendous heart coming back from a goal down to defeat Wesleyan in High Point. Although both teams had chances at goal, the first half ended tied at zero. Wesleyan got on the board first, five minutes into the second half off of a counter attack. The Furies equalized twenty minutes later when captain Reilly Townsend finished off of a corner kick, scoring her first of the season. Both teams attacked, searching for the go-ahead goal. The defense, led by captain Cameron Herndon, kept the Trojans in check holding off several attacks. With four minutes left captain Alex Hunt hit the game winner beating the Wesleyan keeper high from 22 yards out. The Furies finished the game with great defense from all of the players. Their efforts shut down the Trojans to ensure an important road victory.
Varsity Soccer Ties CCD (4/17)
Last night the Forsyth Country Day girls’ soccer team faced off against the Buccaneers from Charlotte Country Day. The action started quickly as Ivy Cocklereece was forced to make a great save in the first minute of the game. The action continued for the next 79 minutes of the match. Both teams traded attacks, tallying one goal apiece. Both goals came in the second half with FCDS scoring the first goal. That goal came in the 54th minute when Katie Stockton tallied her first of the season, finishing an excellent build up through the midfield. Charlotte Country Day equalized with five minutes to go scoring off of corner kick. The last minutes saw both teams desperately fighting for the go ahead goal. The 1-1 draw showcased the Furies skill, grit and teamwork. The Furies’ next game is April 25.
Furies Soccer Falls to Greensboro Day (4/15)
Last night the Forsyth Country Day girls' soccer team dropped a heart-breaker against Greensboro Day School in Greensboro. The Furies controlled the majority of the play outshooting Greensboro ten to three. The Furies had strong performances from defenders Cameron Herndon and Kaitlin Swauger. Both players controlled the back line and created attacking opportunities for the Furies. Greensboro Day withstood the pressure and scored ten minutes into the second half off of a volley from midfield. The Furies continued to control the play, but were unable to tally the equalizer. The Furies next play on Thursday evening at Taylor Field.
Furies Soccer Has Long Weekend (4/11-12)
This past weekend the Forsyth Country Day girls’ soccer team played three action-packed matches hosting Cannon School on Friday and First Assembly and Covenant on Saturday. The Furies dropped their first two matches by scores of 2-0 and 3-0 respectively. In the third match the Furies came out strong, applying constant pressure to the highly touted Covenant Day School defense. Freshman Laine Herndon put FCDS ahead 1-0 on a great strike and the Furies would maintain that lead through the first half. Covenant Day School equalized early in the second on a far-post, driven shot. The remainder of the game saw a tremendous amount of activity as both teams fought for the go-ahead goal. The game ended even at 1-1. The Furies next match is against Greensboro Day on Tuesday in Greensboro.
Furies Soccer Ties St. Mary's (4/8)
Last night the girls' soccer team faced off against St. Marys School from Raleigh. The two teams demonstrated both skill and desire in an action packed game. The match ended tied at ones. The Furies struck first as Meredith Ingle hit an excellent shot that beat the St. Mary’s keeper high and to her side. Midfielder Alex Hunt tallied the assist with a precise diagonal ball which beat several St Mary’s defenders. Ingle was constantly creating opportunities by taking on defenders and setting up her teammates.
Defensively Ivy Cocklereece had another strong performance in goal, stopping shots and coming off of her line to deal with several crosses. The backline also did well to slow down the speedy St. Mary’s forwards.
FCDS had a chance to tally their second goal when Carrie Logan’s drive ricocheted off of the crossbar. St. Mary’s equalized in the second half off of a corner, scoring at the near post.
The game was filled with end-to-end action up until the final whistle, with both teams pushing for the game-winning goal. The Furies’ next game is on Friday against The Cannon School at Taylor Field. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
Durham over Furies Soccer (3/20)
Last night the girls’ varsity soccer team faced off against Durham Academy at Taylor Field. FCDS conceded an early goal to the speedy Cavaliers. After creating a few chances of their own, the Furies allowed two more before halftime. The second half saw FCDS regain more possession and create more scoring opportunities. Freshman Laine Herndon had the best chance of the evening forcing the Durham keeper to make a good save on her low driven shot. Durham scored one more time to make the final score 4-0. The Furies will play next after their spring break.
Furies Soccer Takes Cary Academy (3/18)
This evening the Forsyth varsity girls’ soccer team defeated Cary Academy 2-0 for its first home win of the season. FCDS, who outshot Carey 28 to 2, controlled practically the entire match. The Furies were led by a strong performance from their talented midfield. Junior Alex Hunt controlled the center of the pitch and combined well with Olivia Mitchell to create several scoring opportunities for FCDS. Mitchell tallied her first two goals of the season with strikes in the 43rd and 57th minutes. On the flank freshman Meredith Ingle constantly pressured Cary’s defense producing six shots on goal and several crosses. The backline was steady throughout the match and goalkeeper Ivy Cocklereece was rarely tested. The Furies will play their next game Thursday against Durham Academy at Taylor Field. Kick-off is at six o’clock.
Furies Soccer at Fort Hill Tournament (3/14-15)
This past weekend the girls' soccer team faced off against two 4A schools at the Fort Hill tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Furies split the weekend, defeating Spring Valley 1-0 on Friday night and falling to Dutch Fork by the same score on Saturday.
The first match was an exciting affair that saw action at both ends of the field. Forsyths defense was anchored by senior captain Reilly Townsend. Townsend showed her experience thwarting several Spring Valley attacks. In the midfield, junior captain Alex Hunt stood out among several strong performances. Hunt created numerous attacks in the center, and hit the game winner in the 68th minute driving the ball past the Spring Valley keeper. Laine Herndon tallied the assist, playing a well weighted ball across to Hunt. The Furies' front line pressed Spring Valleys defense throughout the game and created scoring opportunities for FCDS.
In the second game the Furies gave up an early goal in the eleventh minute to Dutch Fork. Although there were several good performances, Forsyth was not able to equalize. In the back, keeper Ivy Cocklereece and defenders Mary Scott Neill and Cameron Herndon had strong games. Midfielder/ forward Meredith Ingle strung passes together to help give Forsyth some possession against a strong Dutch Fork side. In the second half forward Katie Stockton nearly tied the game with her far post shot that forced the keeper to come up with a diving save.
The Furies' next game is Tuesday at home versus Cannon School. Kick off is at 4:30.
Providence Day Over Furies Soccer (3/11)
The Furies dropped their home opener 1-0 to Providence Day in a hard fought battle. The Furies were on the attack several times throughout the match. Forwards Carrie Logan and Laine Herndon applied constant pressure and had two and three shots respectively. Junior, Alex Hunt, saw two shots just miss the frame as she created scoring opportunities from the midfield. Sarah Keiser, helped build the attack and forced the Providence Day keeper to make a great save with her second-half, near post drive. Overall, the Furies outshot Providence Day producing eleven strikes on goal. In her debut between the pipes Ivy Cocklereece had a solid performance making a great tip save in the first half, and almost saving the penalty kick goal Providence scored late in the game. The girls showed tremendous promise in their first match. The Furies will compete next in the Fort Mill Tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
