Wesleyan Takes Furies Soccer (5/7)

This past weekend, the FCDS soccer season ended with an inspiring match, a well played game, and a heart breaking 4th overtime goal for the opponents from Wesleyan.  The 2-1 NCISAA state playoff loss ends the season for FCDS and the high school careers of five wonderful young women.  Li Rusterholz, Mary Scott Neill, Carrie Logan, Caroline Rearden and Olivia Mitchell all leave FCDS soccer with memories of an entertaining final match.  Rearden with her two cross bar rattling free kicks will surely remember her last match as they were oh-so-close to becoming stunning game winners in overtime.

Sarah Keiser’s first half goal stood up until a late Wesleyan free kick tied the match at one goal apiece.  It then took four overtimes to decide the result with WCA knocking in the “golden goal” winner with two minutes remaining before penalty kicks.   The Furies played the 110 minutes with only two reserves as the injury depleted group suffered another major blow as center midfielder Sidney Hanes was knocked out, literally, early in the match with a head injury.  Every FCDS player played their heart out but unfortunately could not hold on for the victory, despite Caroline Rearden’s 40- and 30-yard free kicks rattling off the posts in overtime.

Wesleyan Over Furies Soccer (5/3)

On a festive Senior Night, an inspired FCDS team played very well but couldn’t score a goal and were defeated 1-0 by Wesleyan Academy.  On a night which started with the honoring of four outstanding senior players – Li Rusterholz, Caroline Rearden, Mary Scott Neill and Carrie Logan – FCDS managed their greatest shot total in their last seven matches.  One Wesleyan goal was enough however to doom FCDS’ chances.  A tremendous defensive effort was led by the superb Ivy Cocklereece in the FCDS net.  Mary Scott Neill and Elizabeth Lang anchored the defense, holding Wesleyan to just eight scoring chances.  FCDS now awaits its fate as the NCISAA state seeding committee meets on Wednesday.

Soccer Team Ties Cannon School (5/1)

Despite their continued goal scoring woes, the Furies managed a tie with Cannon School on Saturday in Concord.  The game was a tale of two halves as FCDS controlled the first half despite not getting many quality scoring chances.  The midfield trio of Kacy Rhyne, Sydney Hanes and Olivia Mitchell all played very well, owning the midfield.  The tide would turn in the second half as Cannon pelted the FCDS goal.  Keeper Ivy Cocklereece needed to be at her best to keep the scoresheet clean.  Ivy made seven spectacular saves to keep the Furies in the match.  The 0-0 tie was FCDS' best result in the last six matches.  Hopefully the momentum will continue on Monday's Senior Night as FCDS hosts Wesleyan on their home field at Nancy Rea Stadium.  Plan on coming out as we honor our four outstanding seniors:  Li Rusterholz, Caroline Rearden, Mary Scott Neill and Carrie Logan with a pre-game ceremony.

Reynolds Over Furies Soccer (4/12)

The Fury girls’ soccer team dropped their third straight match last night, a tough loss to local public school foe Reynolds H.S.  Despite an outstanding effort from the back four and a sparkling outing from keeper Ivy Cocklereece, the Furies allowed two late goals for the loss.  Playing without six players, including five normal starters, presented a daunting challenge for FCDS.  It was FCDS who appeared to strike first however, as Meredith Ingle scored from in the RJR six yard area.  After a lengthy delay however, the goal was overturned by the officials due to a handball call.  The Furies hung tough but surrendered two goals in the final eight minutes of the match to suffer the defeat.

Durham Takes Furies Soccer (4/7)

The Fury varsity girls’ soccer team, coming off a long spring break, got back to action on Wednesday.  Unfortunately, FCDS ran into a very strong Durham Academy team featuring Duke Bound, US national Team Player, Mollie Pathman.  Pathman single-handedly led DA to their 4-1 victory over a very depleted FCDS squad.  Despite FCDS’ Meredith Ingle scoring a 2nd minute goal, from the very rare goalkeeper (Ivy Cocklereece) assist, DA proved to be too strong.  FCDS, missing 5 players, tried valiantly but were outmanned by NCISAA #2 ranked DA.  It won’t get any easier as FCDS travels to #1 ranked Charlotte Latin on Friday.  FCDS will return home, sort of, on Monday as they face RJ Reynolds in the WSFCS Soccer Spectacular on Monday at 5:15 p.m. at Bolton Park.

Furies Soccer Zips High Point Christian (3/25)

The varsity girls’ soccer team came out a bit flat on Wednesday but were able to earn a 4-0 victory over High Point Christian.  Meredith Ingle, Elizabeth Lang,  Kacy Rhyne, and Laine Herndon each scored for FCDS, who with the win enter Spring Break with a record of 5-1-3.  Rhyne added an assist along with helpers from Mary Scott Neill, Olivia Mitchell, and Sarah Keiser.  After break, FCDS will face their toughest set of foes, starting with Durham Academy and Charlotte Latin.

Furies Soccer Ties GDS (3/24)

It was a game any soccer purist would have loved.  The Furies’ 0–0 tie with unbeaten, perennial power, Greensboro Day School was not aesthetically pleasing but was tactically effective.  In layman’s terms…it was ugly but it worked!

FCDS, using a makeshift lineup comprised of healthy but inexperienced and experienced but wounded players, held the vaunted GDS offense to five true scoring chances.  The FCDS defensive effort was led by senior captain, Carrie Logan, who arguably played her best match as a Fury.  Logan and her fellow defenders, Mary Scott Neill and  Hannah Harris, were joined at times by Meredith Ingle, Laine Herndon, and Caroline Rearden to form a veritable wall of defense in front of keeper Ivy Cocklereece.  When GDS was able to get in behind the defense, the sure handed Cocklereece denied each chance.  Cocklereece faced 18 GDS shots as well as seven GDS corner kicks and managed to keep a clean sheet as the Furies raised their record to 4-1-3.

Goal scoring chances were scarce for the wounded warriors of FCDS however, Laine Herndon routinely managed to tie up as many as three GDS defenders to create some chances.

On Thursday afternoon, the Furies lace the boots back up for a 6 p.m. home tilt with High Point Christian.  The match will be a stern test for an injured and drained bunch of Furies.  The addition of captain Elizabeth Lang to the lineup should add a burst of energy however which will surely be needed for victory.  Please plan on coming out to the match as fan support of the team helps generate momentum.  Thanks to all those who stayed for our double overtime effort at GDS.  Particular thanks goes to the FCDS Lacrosse team for watching our overtimes after their big win at GDS.

Furies Soccer Zips Forsyth Home Ed (3/16)

The FCDS varsity girls’ soccer team defeated FHE by a score of 5-0.  Despite a sluggish start that saw the Furies lead just 1-0 at the half, the team stepped up to win rather easily.  Meredith Ingle (2 goals, 1 assist) and Laine Herndon (1 goal, 2 assists) paced the FCDS scoring efforts.  Sydney Hanes and Brynlee Parker each added a tally with Hanes and Caroline Rearden adding assists.  With the win, the Furies record stands at 4-1 with weekend games to be played in Fort Mill S.C.

Furies Finish Invitational with Second Win (3/13)

In their second match of the Forsyth Country Day Soccer Invitational, the Furies started slow but still managed a 3-0 victory over Gaston Christian. Gaston put up a stern defensive front but the Furies kept pressuring until the match was won.  Despite a scoreless first half, FCDS still managed the win, thanks, in part, to the efforts of junior midfielder Olivia Mitchell. Mitchell framed her first goal of the season with assists on goals from Meredith Ingle and Brynlee Parker. All of the scoring coming in the second half. Parker, an eighth grader, played very well and her goal is her career first for FCDS varsity. Ivy Cocklereece recorded her 3rd shutout of the young season. With the win, FCDS ups their record to 3-1 on the season.

Furies Take First of Invitational (3/12)

In the first game of the Forsyth Soccer Invitational, the FCDS Furies defeated Providence Day School by a 1-0 score.  Kacy Rhyne's 60th minute goal was all either team could muster as the majority of play took place between the 18 yard boxes.  FCDS had the better of the chances with Laine Herndon and Meredith Ingle causing problems for the PDS defense.  Elizabeth Lang, Carrie Logan, Mary Scott Neill, Emily Brown, and Caroline Rearden combined defensively, to make it an easy game for Ivy Cocklereece in the FCDS goal.  Sydney Hanes and Hannah Harris played solidly in organizing the Furies' mid field.  Despite creating some fine chances, it wasn't until Rhyne slammed home a loose ball that the Furies were able to take the lead.  The goal is Kacy Rhyne's scond in as many games as the Furies raise their season record to 2-1.  On Saturday evening, the Furies will host Gaston Christian School at 6 p.m.

Charlotte Country Day Over Furies Soccer (3/9)

The young varsity soccer team traveled to Charlotte on Tuesday for their first away match of the season.  Unfortunately FCDS ran into a very talented Charlotte Country Day team and returned with a 2-1 defeat.  Things looked good early on as Kacy Rhyne’s first-ever varsity goal helped change the complexion of a one sided affair.  Up to that goal, CCDS was all over the Furies.  Kacy’s lofted effort helped turn the tide a bit and if not for a CCDS penalty kick goal with 20 seconds left in the first half, might have propelled the Furies to victory.  Despite being thoroughly outplayed in the first stanza, the Furies picked up the pace in the second.  A late CCDS goal derailed the potential FCDS upset but the young group can hold their head up.  A fine performance from Ivy Cocklereece and a stalwart defensive effort were highlights of the game.  The Furies look to rebound on Friday as they host Providence Day School at 6 p.m. in the FCDS Soccer Classic.

Congratulations to the 2010 Varsity Girls’ Soccer Captains:  Carrie Logan, Mary Scott Neill and Elizabeth Lang.

Furies Soccer Kicks Off Season with Win (3/4)

The 2010 Fury girls’ varsity soccer team opened their season in fine fashion, with a 5-0 win over visiting Charlotte Christian School.  Laine Herndon and Meredith Ingle led the offensive way for the young FCDS team.  Herndon (3 goals) and Ingle (1 goal and 2 assists) followed up Freshman Hannah Harris' season opener, mid way through the first half.  Harris, playing in her first varsity game, scored  FCDS' first goal off an assist from Ingle.  Ingle, coming off an eight month surgical layoff played very confidently for the Furies.  Elizabeth Lang led a fine defensive effort in front of Ivy Cocklereece who recorded the shutout in the FCDS goal.  Next up for the Furies will be a Tuesday trip to Charlotte to play the always tough Charlotte Country Day team.
