Furies Tennis Takes Greensboro Day (10/14)
FCDS deafeated Greensboro Day School on Senior Night by a final score of 8-1. Senior Sloan Holmes and partner Nicole Angell led the way with a victory at number two doubles to give the Furies a 1-0 lead. They were quickly followed by Nancy Cannon and Chloe Willetts at number one and Laura Worcester and Laura Niersbach at number three as each team earned an 8-0 victory. In singles action Holmes continued to lead the way, making quick work of her opponent at number three sin a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Chloe Willetts and Nancy Cannon followed their senior leader by recording wins of the same score at numbers two and one singles respectively. Laura Worcester wasn't far behind earning a 6-0, 6-0 win of her own at number five singles. Nicole Angell fought through a close first set to claim a 6-3, 6-0 win at number four singles and senior Kim Thornton fought hard at number six but came up a little short by a final score of 6-3, 6-3. The Furies will head to Raleigh on Friday to take on Ravenscroft in their final regular season match starting at 4 p.m.
Furies Tennis Zips Wesleyan (9/23)
The Furies kicked off conference play Tuesday with an impressive 9-0 victory over Wesleyan. In doubles play it was the team of Laura Worcester and Laura Niersbach at the number three spot that put the Furies on the board first with an 8-0 victory. At number one doubles the team of Nancy Cannon and Chloe Willetts earned an 8-3 win as did Sloan Holmes and Nicole Angell at number two. In singles action Chloe Willetts rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number two singles to put the Furies ahead 4-0. Laura Worcester followed Willetts with a similar 6-0, 6-0 win at number five singles. Nancy Cannon played solid to earn a 6-0, 6-2 win at number one singles while Laura Niersbach did as well to earn a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number six. Sloan Holmes overpowered her opponent at number three to earn a 6-1, 6-1 win and Nicole Angell battled through a tough second set to claim a 6-1, 6-4 win at number four singles. The Furies are now 9-1 on the season and will see action again on Thursday when they travel to Greensboro Day to take on another conference rival starting at 4 p.m.
Charlotte Catholic Over Furies Tennis (9/15)
The girls’ varsity tennis team lost a very competitive match to Charlotte Catholic on Monday by a final score of 5-4. In doubles FCDS took an early 1-0 lead when the team of Nancy Cannon and Chloe Willetts won at number one doubles by a score of 8-4. Catholic tied it at one when their number two team defeated Forsyth's Sloan Holmes and Nicole Angell by a score of 8-6. Laura Worcester and Catherine Hanes fought hard at number three but the Catholic team edged them by a score of 9-7 to give the Cougars the 2-1 lead heading into singles. Chloe Willetts tied things right back up at two with a straight set win at number two singles. Sloan Holmes and Laura Worcester came up a little short at number three and five singles respectively to put the Cougars one match from clinching the win. With Nicole Angell and Laura Niersbach both in third set tiebreakers at numbers four and six singles, the Furies gave themselves a great chance at pulling off the come from behind win however it was Charlotte's number six singles player that clinched the team win for the Cougars. The Furies will be back in action on Tuesday when they head to Raleigh to take on Ravenscroft.
Furies Tennis over North Raleigh (8/28)
The women's varsity tennis team improved their record to 5-1 on the season with a 7-2 victory over North Raleigh Christian Academy on Thursday evening. In their first home match of the season, the Furies got out to a quick lead by taking two of the three doubles matches. Nancy Cannon teamed up with Chloe Willetts at number for an 8-3 victory and Sloan Holmes teamed up with Nicole Angell at number two doubles for an 8-3 victory. At number three doubles the team of Catherine Hanes and Casey Rhyne fought hard but came up a little short by a final score of 8-5. In singles action FCDS won five of the six matches to secure their victory. Nancy Cannon played well at number one singles to earn a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Chloe Willetts continued her strong play at number two singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Sloan Holmes was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at number three singles. Nicole Angell was a 7-6, 6-0 winner at number five singles and Laura Niebersch played well to earn a 6-2, 6-2 win at number six singles. Laura Worcester played well but came up a little short at the number four spot. The Furies will be back in action next Wednesday when they take on Durham Academy at Durham.
