The first round of the NCISAA 3A State playoffs was held in Charlotte Tuesday night for #11 seed Forsyth Country Day against #6 seed Covenant Day. After a long drive, the Furies showed up ready to play well and take on the Lions of Covenant Day.  It was a close five game match that unfortunately ended the season for the Furies but they did not go down without a fight.

In the first game Hannah Allgood provided senior leadership as she served the Furies to a seven point lead, while fellow senior Caitlin Coates passed nails to the team's setters to put Covenant Day on the attack. Sarah Allison also pulled a serving run to bring the Furies back from the Lions offensive run.  The Lions were able to capitalize on the Furies defensive mistakes however and took the first game 25-20.

The following game played out similarly with the Furies battling hard with the Lions. The Furies had consistent swings from Jenny Temas and Sarah Allison to put points on the board and both teams had good rallies but in the end the Lions took the win 25-20.

The Furies came alive in the third game though and starting blocking and making defensive adjustments to the Lions hitters.  Neha Garg and Emmy Wood ran a productive offense with Allgood, Temas, Coates, Allison, Sydney Hanes, Emily Johnsrude, and Farrahn Wood. Good passes led to great sets and more kills to propel the Furies to the win 25-23.

The Furies kept the momentum in the fourth game and served exceptionally well with serving runs from Allgood and Johnsrude. There were some great passes from Sydney Shaw, Carolyn Ansel and Allison Hall. The Furies continued to block and swing away and posted a 25-22 victory to force the match to a deciding fifth game.

The Furies and Lions battled point for point for the match win and advancement to the state quarterfinals. The game was tied at 8-8 but, after a missed serve for the Furies, the Lions took advantage of the lead and scored the final six points a final score of 15-8 and the match victory.

Covenant Day advances to the quarterfinals where they will face #3 Charlotte Christian on Friday morning at 11:00. The Furies fought hard and were able to work together to take the match to five games and it was great to see the team reach their potential, ending the 2009 season with such a great performance.

13-25

It was a rough night for the Furies as they traveled to Greensboro Day School to play against the Bengals in a PACIS conference match.  Greensboro Day came ready to play tough.  The Furies started the match off a little slow and gradually built momentum later in the evening, but GDS was mentally prepared for the games and fought hard against FCDS.  The Furies lost a frustrating two games (22-25 and 23-25), but came back in the third.  Sydney Hanes attacked the opposing team with tough serves, leading the Furies with seven aces and helped lead the Furies to a 25-23 win in the third.  Unfortunately, GDS went into the fourth game fired up and played great defense with hard-driven serves to take an early lead.  Even after a comeback, the Furies lost the match in four games.  FCDS will spend the next couple of days preparing physically and mentally for the next PACIS conference match against Wesleyan on Friday night.

Yesterday, the Furies traveled to Charlotte Christian to fight against the Knights. After watching an epic JV match (who won in three games), the Furies were ready to go! The Furies started the game with strong serves but the Knights’ quick offense brought the Furies to a halt. Play went back and forth between the teams. The Fury offense was lead with kills by Hannah Allgood. Unfortunately, the Knights battled their way to the lead and won the first game 25-16. In the second game the Furies switched to a different offense with setter Emmy Wood.  The Furies were trying out new offensive plays to put the ball down. But after a few missed serves and stationary defense the Furies lost the game 15-25. Caitlin Coates started the third game with four straight points to give the Furies the lead. It was a close game with stellar swings from Jenny Temas and Hannah Allgood, as well as good defense from Carolyn Ansel. The Furies were much more focused and played with more heart but sadly fell short in the third to lose 21-25.

Furies Volleyball Loses Frustrating Match to Conference Rival Wesleyan (9/22)

15-25 23-25 15-25

It was a charged night in the Childress Activities Center, as the Forsyth Country Day Furies played the Wesleyan Trojans for their first conference match of the season. The Furies started the match off trailing 6-1, after the Trojans served tough against FCDS. But the Furies were not ready to give up so early in the game and battled their way back to tie the game 6-6 with consistent serving from Sarah Allison. The quick offense and tough serves from Wesleyan were unexpected by FCDS and Wesleyan got away winning by a score of 25-15. Beginning the second game, the Furies started off with lightning power. A powerful offense and a strong defense helped lead the Furies in the beginning. FCDS led the game until 17, but Wesleyan fought back and tied the game with FCDS at 18-18 and went on to win the second game 25-23. Frustrated from the loses in the first two games, the Furies were unable to regroup in the third and final game of the match. Although the Furies never led in the third game, they had some great defensive plays against the quick hits by the Wesleyan Trojans. Wesleyan won the third game 25-15 to take the match in three. The Furies now have a couple days of practice to get reenergized and organized for the Serve for the Cure Tournament in Charlotte this weekend. That tournament benefits breast cancer research.

Durham Academy Takes Furies Volleyball (9/17)

25-22 20-25 25-15 19-25 10-15

After a great practice on Wednesday, the Furies were pumped to play the Durham Academy Cavaliers on Thursday night. The Cavaliers came out strong with tough middle hits to score nine points quickly but Emily Johnsrude stepped up for the Furies and served six straight points to tie the set. The Furies battled through and won 25-22. The Furies seemed to rest on their laurels a bit after that first win as they seemingly relaxed their defense and the Cavaliers took advantage with a quick lead in set two.  Durham continued on in that game and took a 25-20 victory. The Furies tightened their defense back up however and also served consistently to take the lead in the third set. The Furies would not relinquish that lead as they continued with aggressive serves from Emmy Wood and rolled onto a victory by a score of 25-15. Durham Academy did not give up and they began serving well as they jumped out to a quick lead in the fourth set. The Furies fought hard but Durham Academy kept their lead with quick middle offense and utilized their front row setter. The Furies could not pull it together for  a fourth set win and extended the match to a fifth set by winning 25-19. The fifth set was an exciting match with each team battling for the win. Play was consistent but little errors held the Furies back and the Cavaliers eventually won 15-10 to clinch the match.
The Furies are now 7-8 in the regular season and 1-0 in the PACIS conference. The team now looks forward to facing Wesleyan Christian at home on Tuesday night. Come out and support the girls!

Nervous excitement filled the Childress Activities Center tonight, as it was the first home game of many for the Furies who played against Charlotte Country Day School.  Right away, it was evident that this match was going to be a battle.  FCDS came out strong in the first game with kills by Hannah Allgood and Jenny Temas.  Although the team was up at the beginning of the game, they lost momentum in the end and lost the first game 25-20.  The second game proved to be an intense set as the girls battled with the Bucs for every point.  Great defense by Caitlin Coates and Farrahn Wood, who brought up six and four digs, respectively, and a "killer" offense run by Emmy Wood (eleven assists) with Hannah Allgood and Jenny Temas gave  Charlotte Country Day several strong swings.  After leading the game however errors by the Furies brought the Bucs back into the game.  Every point from 23 to 30 was a battle but unfortunately Charlotte Country Day came out with the win.  In the third game as well the Furies pushed hard and fought their way towards what they thought might be a win, but in the end came up just shy.  Although it was not a victory on the scoreboard tonight, there was significantly better play than earlier in the week and the team looks forward to filling the holes in the offense that will bring us victory.
