Fury Wrestling Senior Night (1/31)

The Fury varsity wrestling team took to the mat on Tuesday night against North Raleigh Christian Academy and Metrolina Christian Academy, two schools in the NCISAA who have recently started wrestling programs. Before the action, the team conducted its annual Senior Night celebration. Senior managers Meiyao Tysinger, Winston Allgood, and Logan Smith were thanked for their year of service. The team also recognized and honored senior wrestlers Connor McLarney and captain Max Dronne.

The first match pitted the Furies against a very athletic squad from NRCA. David Lord wrestled very well in the exhibition match, pinning his opponent in the first period. 113-pounder Owen Baughan got the Furies on the board with a first-period fall over Nicholas Hahn. Immanuel Duncan battled hard but came up short against the Knights’ Jake Strong. After Griffin Mueller received a forfeit at 126, 132-pounder Brad Murphy increased the Fury lead by notching a second-period fall over Russ Smith. The Knights then picked up a forfeit at 138. The Furies boosted their lead with consecutive first-period falls by Brian Murphy, Jordan Budd, and Max Dronne. After NRCA took another match by forfeit, Chris Tambling took on William Shubert, but the more experienced Knight was able to win by fall. Will Driscoll and Tyler Ruble picked up forfeits to put the Fury team score out of reach. The final match of the night saw 106 pounder Dylan Lannie take on Nicholas Hahn. Lannie fought off his back several times but the Knight wrestler was able to win by fall. The Furies prevailed 48-36.

In the second match, the Furies faced Metrolina Christian. Due to a series of injuries, MCA’s line-up was not full. Dylan Lannie, Owen Baughan, Atticus Funk, Griffin Mueller, Brad Murphy, Jordan Budd, Connor McLarney, Chris Tambling, and Tyler Ruble all picked up forfeits. Two Furies notched victories as 145-pounder Brian Murphy pinned James Dalrymple and Max Dronne won by a 16-0 technical fall over Elijah Blalock. The final tally was FCDS 65 MCA 18. The Furies conclude their regular season on February 9th with the PACIS tri-match at Greensboro Day and then head to the NCISAA State Tournament at Charlotte Country Day on February 17. GO FURIES!

Fury Wrestlers Spend Weekend in Charlotte (1/27-28)

The FCDS wrestling team traveled to Charlotte this past weekend to take on several NCISAA foes. On Friday night, the Furies faced the Buccaneers of Charlotte Country Day as the host team held its Senior Night. FCDS jumped out to an 18-0 lead as Dylan Lannie, Owen Baughan, and Atticus Funk all received a forfeit. After the Bucs got on the scoreboard with a fall at 126, Brad Murphy pinned Carlton Furr in the first period. At 138 Dustin McNeer recorded a 12-5 decision over Henry Davis. Earning bonus points at 145 was Brian Murphy, who earned a dominating 12-1 major decision over Jack Shell. The 152 bout proved to be one of the night’s most exciting matches as Jordan Budd battled the Bucs’ Akanimo Eyo. The lead changed hands a few times, but the Bucs scored again with a late third-period fall. Senior captain Max Dronne won a 7-2 decision over Harlan Boyles. Although CCDS picked up 24 points via 2 forfeits and 2 falls, the Furies came out victorious when heavyweight Tyler Ruble picked up a forfeit, giving FCDS a 40-36 victory.

On Saturday, the Furies went to the Charger Duals at Providence Day School. With several significant match-ups against schools we will see at the State Tournament, our wrestlers had their work cut out for them. The Furies opened the day against Christ School. Dylan Lannie wrestled in his first varsity match and put the team ahead with a fall over the Greenies’ Jake Lambrecht. Owen Baughan received a forfeit at 113. At 120, Atticus Funk dropped a close 11-9 decision to Sam Grabenstein. The Greenies stretched their lead with two consecutive falls. In what would prove to be the pivotal bout of the match, Dustin McNeer recorded a 16-0 tech fall over Miller Robinson. Brian Murphy followed with an 11-2 major decision over Stuart Mason. The Greenies and Furies traded falls and forfeits until Tyler Ruble pinned the Greenies’ Chike Ekwonu to even the team score at 39-39. Tiebreakers follow a set of criteria. Due to Dustin McNeer’s tech fall, the Furies won the match on the 6th criteria.

In the second match, the Furies faced Charlotte Latin. The Hawks gained the lead when highly touted 113-pounder Billy McClelland bested Owen Baughan by a fall. Misfortune struck the Furies when Atticus Funk had to drop out of his match with an injury default. At 132, Brad Murphy got the Furies on the board with a dominant 12-1 major decision over Bentley Dalton. Dustin McNeer add to the lead with a second-period fall over Tommy Royther. Brian Murphy continued the Furies’ winning streak with a 9-4 decision over Matt Borin. At 152, Jordan Budd battled the Hawks’ Matt Bredder but fell by a 10-2 decision. Latin had age and experience in their favor in the upper weights as they recorded falls and forfeits. In one of the most exciting bouts for any team, Tyler Ruble and Latin’s Toby Okwara gave fans a match for the ages. In a bout that saw several lead changes, the two titans had a 14-13 nail-biter going when the Hawk heavy recorded a late third-period fall. Not to be outdone, Dylan Lannie went out and won the last match for the Furies, picking up a 5-0 decision over Ken Koch.

The Furies’ third match saw a rematch with CCDS. At 138, Dustin McNeer battled back from an early deficit to tie his opponent, but dropped a heart-breaking overtime decision 10-8. Both teams won 7 matches. However, the Furies won all of their matches via fall or forfeit. Hard-fought matches by McNeer and Max Dronne saved valuable team points and the Furies defeated the Buccaneers 42-38.

The Furies faced defending state champion Wesleyan Christian Academy in their final match in pool competition. After the Trojans jumped out to a 6-0 lead, Brad Murphy evened the score with a fall over Nathan Trent. Misfortune struck the Furies a second time when Dustin McNeer had to drop out of his match via an injury default. WCA built their lead via decision and fall until Max Dronne edged Hamilton Beck 4-2. Tyler Ruble won via forfeit. In the final Fury victory, 106-pounder Dylan demonstrated incredible grit. Trailing going into the second period, Dylan took advantage of a reversal and pinned Henderson Beck.

With a 2-2 record, the Furies ended up going for 3rd in the consolation match with host PDS. In a match that saw a number of forfeits for both sides, Brian Murphy won a 15-6 major decision over Ellis Glasco. Showing great progress in technique, Jordan Budd recorded a fall over the Chargers’ Brian Leech. Although the younger Furies battled valiantly against older Chargers, PDS won the final match 42-39.

Wrestling hard against strong competition and picking up valuable mat time were Owen Baughan, Griffin Mueller, Immanuel Duncan, David Lord, Chris Tambling, and Will Driscoll. These young Furies competed against state champs and place-winners and gave it everything they had for their teammates.

Thank you toall of the parents who travelled down to Charlotte, provided food for the kids, and treated the coaches to dinner at Pancake House!

Fury Wrestlers Take Kerr-Vance (1/17)

On Tuesday night, the Fury varsity wrestling team took on NCISAA foes Kerr-Vance Academy and South Lake Christian Academy. The Furies came away with a 54-18 victory over KVA. Due to a number of forfeits, only four head-to-head matches took place. The Furies won all four in dominating fashion. Brad Murphy, Dustin McNeer, Brian Murphy, and Jordan Budd notched first-period falls over their opponents. Owen Baughan, Atticus Funk, Griffin Mueller, Chris Tambling, and Will Driscoll received forfeits to add to the team’s point total. In the second match, the Furies faced a strong South Lake squad. The Eagles filled every weight class. After two South Lake victories by decision, David Lord received a forfeit. Brian Murphy and Jordan Budd each bumped a weight class to try to reverse the Furies’ fortunes. Murphy won by a 15-2 major decision. Budd secured the first take down and wrestled well but came up just short against his Eagle opponent. South Lake built their lead with forfeits and also secured a few falls. Owen Baughan won by a 12-6 decision but the Eagles countered with a decision and fall to end the match. With several matches decided by only a few points the Furies look to get another shot at SLC at the Charger Duals on January 28.

Fury Wrestlers Take Charlotte Christian (1/12)

Last night the FCDS varsity wrestling team took on NCISAA foe Charlotte Christian School and came away with the victory 48-27!

Tyler Ruble got things going early at 285, in dominating fashion. His 16-second win by fall in the opening bout got the Furies off to a great start. Following a double forfeit at 106 and a hard fought loss at 113 from Owen Baughan, Atticus Funk accepted the forfeit win at 120. Following another hard fought loss at 126 from Griffen Mueller, sophomore Brad Murphy kept thing close with a very tough loss to CCS Senior Daniel Goldstein 4-2. After that match, the Furies got rolling again and never looked back. Dustin McNeer and Brian Murphy accepted forfeits at 138 and 145 respectively and Jordan Budd dominated his opponent at 152, winning by technical fall in the third period by the score of 19-4! Senior Max Dronne followed that win up by picking up a fall at 160, late in the second period to keep things going for FCDS. Following a forfeit by FCDS at 170, Chris Tambling accepted a forfeit of his own at 182. To end the dual meet freshman Will Driscoll won dominated his opponent, needing just under one minute to score a takedown and a fall at 195!

Next up for the Furies is a home match on Tuesday against another NCISAA rival, Southlake Christian. The Fury Middle School Grapplers will start things out at 4:30 followed by the varsity match at 5:30.

11th Annual Fury Duals (1/7)

The 11th Annual Fury Duals proved to be as exciting as expected. While Pinecrest walked away with the team title, the FCDS varsity wrestlers showed very well.
The Furies got off to a great start defeating Southern Lee by a score of 45-36. After Brian Murphy received a forfeit at 145, 152-pounder Jordan Budd dominated his opponent and notched a second-period fall. Although Southern Lee took the lead via two falls and a forfeit, the Furies regained the lead when Chris Tambling, Will Driscoll, and Tyler Ruble received forfeits. Southern Lee evened the score via a forfeit and fall. At 120, Atticus Funk got the Furies back on track with a hard-fought 3-1 decision. Southern Lee took back a slight lead after a fall. At 132, Brad Murphy put the Furies ahead with an impressive performance and a second-period fall. Dustin McNeer rounded out the Furies’ scoring with a forfeit.

FCDS faced eventual runner-up S.E. Guildford in the second round. Brian Murphy was the sole Fury to come away with a victory, winning by injury default in a closely-contested bout. Against Reagan, heavyweight Tyler Ruble won by fall. At 138 Dustin McNeer won by a 10-6 decision. Brian Murphy earned the team bonus points with a 12-4 major decision.

The Furies then faced Ledford in their final bout of the day. Tyler Ruble finished strong by notching his second fall of the day. Brian Murphy won a hard-fought 6-3 decision. Captain Max Dronne finished out the Furies’ scoring with a 7-2 decision at 160. Sophomore Brian Murphy finished the day undefeated at 4-0 while Heavyweight Tyler Ruble finished his day at 3-1!

Immanuel Duncan, David Lord, Owen Baughan, Griffin Mueller, Connor McLarney, and Will Driscoll performed well in the matches in which they competed. They showed they had mastered new techniques. After a great week of practice, the coaches were very proud of the guys’ gutsy efforts and intensity. Many wrestlers showed great improvement and demonstrated how much the team has progressed since the beginning of the season. The Furies are back in action on Thursday with a home match against Charlotte Christian at 5:00.

Fury Wrestlers at King of the Mat (12/22-23)

Four Fury varsity wrestlers competed in the forty-team King of the Mat Tournament at North Davidson H.S. just before Christmas. This event was even more competitive this year, as it was single-elimination until the Round of 16. At 132, Brad Murphy wrestled hard but came up short against Akio Fujiwara of Ardrey Kell H.S. At 120, Atticus Funk recorded a fall over Trenton Hagen of Columbia H.S. (PA). At 145, Brian Murphy won by fall over John Glunt of Jay M. Robinson H.S. At 160, captain Max Dronne advanced with an 8-3 decision over Lake Norman H.S.’s Will Greene. Although all three Furies were eliminated in subsequent rounds, they competed with grit and intensity. The team will be back in action in the 11th Annual Fury Duals, which will be held at FCDS on Saturday, January 7.

Fury Wrestlers at Falcon 10 (12/17)

The Fury varsity wrestlers traveled to S.E. Guilford H.S. for the Falcon 10 Dual Tournament. Only filling eight weight classes meant that the Furies would be starting out with a deficit in team score. Still, the wrestlers performed very well. In three of the five dual matches, the Furies won a majority of the head-to-head match-ups.

In the first match against Southern Lee, Jordan Budd notched the first Fury victory at 152 with a second-period fall. Immanuel Duncan received a forfeit at 120 and then Brad Murphy recorded a quick first-period fall at 132. At 138, Dustin McNeer edged his opponent by an 8-5 decision. Brian Murphy received a forfeit to finish out the Fury scoring.

Against host school S.E. Guilford, the Furies faced several experienced, athletic wrestlers. Atticus Funk won by fall over Eric Best at 120 for the lone Fury victory.

Ledford presented another impressive challenge to the Furies in the third round of the tournament. Brian Murphy edged his opponent by a score of 8-6. Senior captain Max Dronne scored bonus points via a 15-1 major decision.

Against Northern Guilford, Max started the Furies’ scoring with a second-period fall. At 120, Atticus Funk recorded a first-period fall to up the Fury total. Brad Murphy earned a 7-2 victory at 132 and Dustin McNeer followed with hard-fought 4-2 decision, in overtime, at 138. Brian Murphy closed out the match with a dominating 11-4 decision.

In the final match of the day, the Furies faced Mallard Creek. Atticus Funk scored the first Fury points with a first-period fall. Dustin McNeer notched a third-period fall with Brian Murphy following soon thereafter with a first-period pin. After Max Dronne received a forfeit, Will Driscoll earned a first-period fall in impressive fashion to round out the Fury scoring.

Furies Wrestling at Bishop McGuinness (12/6)

On Tuesday night, the FCDS varsity wrestling team traveled to Bishop McGuinness for a tri-match with the Villains and with Carver H.S. The Furies battled hard and came away with one win and won loss.

Forsyth opened with a loss to Bishop by a score of 57-18. Even though the score didn’t necessarily reflect it, the Furies were in every match and put forth a great effort! Eighth grader Thomas Moretz wrestled well in his varsity debut. Owen Baughan set the tempo by scoring the first takedown in his match but lost by fall in the second period. Also making his varsity debut, was Immanuel Duncan who put forth strong efforts against a more experienced wrestler. Atticus Funk drew Bishop’s best wrestler and competed hard. Brad Murphy had one of night’s most interesting matches as the score was close before a late third-period fall. Dustin McNeer wrestled well to gain ground on his opponent in the third period but was edged 9-5. Brian Murphy got the Furies on the board with a fall at 145 pounds. Max Dronne also picked up a win by fall at 160 pounds. Will Driscoll showed great improvement by securing the first takedown and nearly recording a fall. Finally, Tyler Ruble capped off the scoring for the Furies via a forfeit at 285 pounds.

Against Carver, the Furies came away with a win by a score of 66-6. With many forfeits by Carver due to weight loss plan issues, there were only three bouts wrestled and the Furies won all three. Jordan Budd wasted no time in pinning his opponent at 152 pounds in just under one minute! Max Dronne followed suit and pinned his Carver opponent in just under 45 seconds to finish the night with two wins by fall. The Furies forfeited at 170 pounds. Following a double forfeit at 182, Freshman Will Driscoll picked up a win via forfeit at 195 pounds. After a double forfeit at 220 pounds, Tyler Ruble took to the mat at 285 pounds, weighing in at a mere 239 pounds while his opponent used every pound of the weight class allowance and weighed in at 282 pounds. Ruble was unphased and pushed his opponent around the mat and finally, with just under 30 seconds remaining in the first period, was able to lock up his pinch headlock and power his opponent to the mat for the fall!

The Furies face NCISAA opponents Providence Day and Ravenscroft next, on Friday at PDS.

Furies Wrestling at Falcon Frenzy (12/2)

The Fury varsity wrestling team travelled to West Henderson H.S. on Friday, December 2 for the 30-team Falcon Frenzy tournament. The boys displayed competitiveness and skill throughout the tournament. Although at times they faced defeat at the hands of very athletic competition, the boys continued to demonstrate solid technique. The Furies increased their team point total over last year’s results at the same tournament. At 120 pounds, sophomore Atticus Funk received a bye in the first round and secured a spot in the second day of competition by defeating McDowell H..S’s Jacob Gardner 5-0. On Saturday, Funk lost to East Rutherford’s Cody Hall, by fall, to move to the consolation round. After a hard-fought battle, he lost a 7-0 decision to Robbinsville’s Kade Guffey. At 132 pounds, Brad Murphy performed well in his first appearance at the Frenzy. The Fury freshman dominated T.C. Roberson’s Michael Polprasert from the neutral position on his way to a 9-6 victory. Although he lost by fall to Robbinsville’s Jess Haney, Murphy advanced to the second day with a 5-4 decision over Ryan Turner of King’s Mountain and a 6-4 decision over North Henderson’s Primo Arrona. He lost by fall to East Rutherford’s Cameron Moore. Also making his first appearance at the Frenzy was freshman Dustin McNeer. McNeer advanced by pinning Asheville High’s Tony Gaston, before moving to the consolation round, after dropping a 13-5 decision to Enka’s Cody Tweed. McNeer picked up a fall over R-S Central’s Dylan Swink before losing an exciting 11-10 barn-burner to Erwin’s Ashton Spratt. At 145 pounds, sophomore Brian Murphy advanced on a 13-9 decision over Erwin’s Isaiah Goettge. A third-period fall to Matt Kamisol of TC Roberson moved him on to the consolation round. In that consolation round Murphy earned a fall over Polk County’s Alex Metcalf, before dropping a 20-11 decision to Josh Dula of McDowell. At 152 pounds, sophomore Jordan Budd faced some very athletic competition. Although he did not advance, Jordan showed how quickly he has picked up on new technique and did a number of good things in his matches. At 160 pounds, senior captain Max Dronne earned a 12-1 major decision over R-S Central’s Josh Hensley before getting bumped to the consolation round by Markell Hemphill of King’s Mountain. He was eliminated there by Hendersonville’s Alec Stuller. Senior Connor McLarney showed good progress at 170 pounds as well. Although he didn’t advance, he was able to build a lead in his final match but was eventually defeated by East Rutherford’s Drake Gagner. At 285 pounds, junior Tyler Ruble showed the advancement in his skills and earned points in his matches but was defeated by more experienced wrestlers. The coaches were pleased with how our wrestlers competed in such a large tournament. The Furies will be back on the mat Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., at Bishop McGuinness, against the host and Carver H.S.
