Fury Wrestlers Compete at Prep Nationals (2/26-27)
Five FCDS wrestlers competed in the 75th Annual National Prep Wrestling Tournament at Lehigh University on Feb. 26-27. These wrestlers qualified for entry into this prestigious tournament by winning or placing second at their weight class during the 2010 NCISAA State Wrestling Tournament. The tournament drew competitors from 125 teams from across the United States. Senior captains Kwame Seymour (171) and Brett Harris (285) competed as did juniors David Wall (140), Christian Funder (145), and Stout Watson. All Fury wrestlers won matches, a feat the Furies had not accomplished in recent years. David Wall defeated Eli Walters of Rutgers Prep 6-2 before dropping an 8-3 decision to The Hill School’s Karl Wiszermerski. Kwame Seymour pinned Germantown Academy’s TJ Nolan before being eliminated by Daniel Gallagher of Belmont Hill School. Brett Harris defeated Jeffrey Knighton of The Hill School 2-1 before losing to Alberto Muratalla of St. Mark’s School.
Christian Funder had a great tournament and nearly reached the medal round. He won his first-round match 3-0 over Ochirbat Bayanjargal of St. Benedict’s but was upended by Adam Morris of Wyoming Seminary. In the consolation rounds, Christian earned a dominant major decision 9-0 over Andy Fontenot of St. Thomas, followed by a 3-1 decision over Nicholas Ogonowski of Belmont Hill. Although he wrestled very well, he lost a decision to eventual medalist Cody Barrick of Mercersburg Academy. Stout Watson placed 4th in a very competitive weight class. Stout dominated his first-round opponent, Avery Williams from Archbishop Curley, en route to a 14-2 decision. He followed that with a 7-2 decision over Loyola-Blakefield’s Gus Moreno. In the quarterfinals, Stout faced #1 seed Chris Moon of Wyoming Seminary. Both wrestlers made few errors but Moon, the eventual champion, eked out a 3-0 decision. The consolation rounds would test junior’s mettle and he would respond admirably. Stout edged Loomis Chaffee’s Johann Roebelen 1-0, which he followed with a 3-1 overtime victory over Blair Academy’s Brad Bishop. An impressive 8-1 decision over #2 seed Ethan Keiser of Mercersburg ensured Watson a berth in the consolation finals. In a hotly contested match between two similar opponents, Stout battled Cape Henry Collegiate’s Sam Law to a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation. Law prevailed by earning a takedown part way through the first overtime period.
With each Fury wrestler earning team points, FCDS finished an impressive 29th in the field of 125 teams.Fury Wrestlers at State Tournament (2/19-20)
The FCDS Furies showed extremely well at the 2010 NCISAA State Wrestling Tournament. With a field of 16 teams entering the Childress Activities Center on Friday, the Fury wrestlers faced a daunting task. Nevertheless, they showed characteristic grit and determination as they pursued their goal of a 5th state title. Strong teams from Charlotte Latin, Providence Day, and Charlotte Christian all had their sights set on surpassing the Furies. Well-skilled wrestlers from a variety of schools stood in the way of individual Fury wrestlers who sought state titles. Nevertheless, a packed house full of Fury fans supported the host team throughout the tournament. Although Hawks from Latin jumped out to an early 33-point lead, the Furies battled back through the quarterfinals and consolation rounds to shave 17 points off the leader. Several Furies scored points including a number of talented middle-school wrestlers who have competed on the Varsity squad. Saturday opened with the semifinal round. With some of their best wrestling of the year, the Furies passed the Hawks by putting 6 wrestlers into the finals while Latin only managed 3 finalists. However, Latin eclipsed the Furies in the consolations by garnering four third-place finishes and two fourth-places finishes. Losing only two varsity starters to graduation, the Fury wrestlers have already begun their commitment to bringing another NCISAA title back to Lewisville. The coaches were very proud about the performance of all wrestlers at the tournament.
Eight-grader Atticus Funk (103) wrestled very well in his first state tournament. After dropping his first match, Atticus picked up a pin over Pierce Tooley of Kerr-Vance Academy and another one over Christ School’s Banks Simmons, earning 6 team points for the Furies. Seventh-grader Brad Murphy (112) contributed four points to the team score in one of the most exciting matches of the early rounds. In a see-saw battle with Oleg Terentiev of Charlotte Latin, Murphy was trailing 13-9 in the third period when he turned the older Hawk and earned a pin. Junior James Pike (119) fell to Matt Plaus of PDS in the quarters but came back to earn a major decision over Christian Clinton of Fayetteville Christian. Another valiant effort came from eighth-grader Jordan Budd (125) who picked up team points with a consolation round pin of Asheville School’s Mitchell Muir and a decision over Nick Burrow of Southlake Christian.
Junior Cole Edwards (130) won his third consecutive NCISAA title in exciting fashion. After pinning Southlake’s Sam Bryant and defeating Peter Ryan of PDS, Edwards faced a very athletic Sean Langston of Charlotte Latin in the semi-finals. Trailing 2-1 in the third period, Edwards earned an escape to send the match to overtime. An impressive takedown clinched the victory as throngs of Fury fans erupted in cheers. Edwards won his state title with a third-period fall of Northside Christian’s Maverick Starkey. Eighth-grader Brian Murphy (135) wrestled well in his first state tournament but fell short in his bid for a state title. Junior David Wall (140) wrestled very well to earn a return trip to the state finals. After pinning Charlotte Country Day’s Austin Baker, Wall faced a formidable opponent in Joe Borrelli of Charlotte Christian, who he edged in a well-wrestled 4-3 tilt. Wall faced Latin’s Ross Calhoun in the finals but dropped a close decision. Junior Christian Funder made his fourth trip to the state finals with dominant performances in a pin of Latin’s Sam Booke and technical fall Richie Erb of PDS. He won his third NCISAA title with an impressive pin of Charlotte Country Day’s Reid Palmer, further adding to the Fury point total.
After missing much of the season due to an early injury, junior Jay Baughan (152) contributed significantly to the team’s total points. In one of the tournament’s toughest weight classes, Baughan pinned Charlotte Christian’s Jake Stidham and Austin Hill of Ravenscroft and won by major decision over Asher Lipsitz of PDS before being eliminated by bronze medalist Sam Remick of Southlake Christian. Junior Stout Watson (160) continued a season of dominance by pinning his way through the tournament. He retained his undefeated record and earned his third state title with falls of CCD’s Nic Adamson and Grant Catoe of Christ School. Watson won his third state title with a pin of Phillip Stone of Asheville School. Two-time NCISAA runner-up Kwame Seymour (171) took advantage of his last shot at a state title with his typical flair and up-tempo style. After notching a pin of Southlake’s Hunter Latshaw and a victory over Greensboro Day’s Blaine Browning, the Fury senior faced #1 seed Temple Sloan of Ravenscroft. A slick ankle pick in the first period helped Seymour build a lead he would never relinquish, capturing the state championship with a 4-3 victory. Junior Lauri Anttila (189) proved to be an impressive rookie and added to the Fury team total with consolation round pins over Ben Willis of Asheville School and Kerr-Vance’s Tabbert, who had pinned Anttila earlier in the season. The final Fury in competition was defending state champion Brett Harris (285). The Fury senior pinned Latin’s Nick Sella and Jonathan Wells of Greensboro Day to repeat as the best private school heavyweight in the state.
The coaches would like to extend their gratitude to all of the volunteers who made the tournament a smashing success. Student and faculty volunteers manned the clocks and kept score to keep the event running smoothly. Special thanks go to the wrestling parents who staffed the concession stand, hospitality room, and supplied both the team table and hospitality room with excellent fare. We also would like to thank the Athletic Dept. for all of their support and hard work throughout the event.
Fury Wrestlers at Prep School Slam (1/23)
This past weekend the FCDS Varsity Wrestling Team traveled to Atlanta, GA to compete in the prestigious Southeastern Prep School Slam II wrestling tournament. This event, hosted by Holy Innocents Episcopal School, showcased some of the private school wrestling in the southeast as well as nationally. Teams such as Baylor School out of Chattanooga Tennessee and The Kiski School, ranked 4th overall in the national prep rankings, were on hand to battle for the top spot.
The Furies, traveling with only 8 wrestlers, finished in 11th place overall with 111 points, ahead of 20 other top level private wrestling programs. FCDS placed four wrestlers in the top 6 with 2 others wining multiple matches to aid in the team effort. Junior Stout Watson and Senior Kwame Seymour advanced to the finals while junior Christian Funder advanced to the consolation finals and senior Brett Harris made the 5th place final.
Watson, who remains undefeated this season, captured the individual title at 160lbs. Watson advanced to the championship match via three pins and a major decision before defeating Daniel Todd of Montgomery Bell Academy 4-0 in the finals. Kwame Seymour also advanced to the championship finals at 171lbs. Seymour also opened the tournament with two pins and a major decision early before winning in the semis 3-2 to advance to the finals. Unfortunately Seymour would fall in the finals to a tough Jeffery Holmes of Benedictine Military Academy by fall late in the first period.
Junior Christian Funder would also have a great tournament, going 5-1 overall. Funders only loss came in the semifinals to the eventual champion Robert Henderson of The Kiski School by the score of 12-1. Funder bounced back with two dominant wins to capture third place in a very tough weight class.
Senior Brett Harris captured 5th place in the 285 pound weight class. Harris started his tournament run 2-0 before falling in the quarterfinals to the eventual runner up 4-1. Harris battled back and picked up two more wins before falling in the consolation semi-finals to Hunter Skaggs of The Marist School 3-0, placing Harris in the 5th place final where he won by fall over Tristan Rulli of Christ Church Episcopal School.
Aiding in the Furies fun for the top ten were Juniors Cole Edwards and David Wall. Edwards opened up his tournament with two dominant victories before dropping a heart breaker in the quarter finals to the eventual 3rd place finisher from Riverside Military. Edwards then bounced back with a fall in the next round before dropping another close match to the eventual 4th place finisher Bennett Reece of Baylor. David Wall also opened up with a dominant win by fall in the first round but dropped his next match to eventual top four place Michael Hooker of McCallie. Wall bounced back with two pins in a row to advance to the consolation semi finals where he dropped a tough match to Garrett Gainey of Woodward Academy to get eliminated from the event.
Also making the trip and battling hard were James Pike at 119 and Lauri Antilla at 189. Both competitors lost two tough matches to two eventual placers early on but they wrestled well and showed great improvement.
Next up for the Furies is a home NCISAA tri-match with Northside Christian and Providence Day on Tuesday at 5:30 pm in the Tireney Gymnasium. FCDS pulled out a close match earlier this month with PDS 39-33, so it should be a great match to watch! Come out and support your Fury Wrestlers as they continue their “Drive for Five”!
Varsity Wrestling at Charlotte Country Day (1/12)
On Tuesday the FCDS Varsity Wrestling team traveled to Charlotte to compete in a tri-match with Charlotte Country Day and Providence Day. The Furies knew going into the event that they would have to wrestle their best to come away with two victories and the Furies did just that.
In the first match of the night the Furies took on CCDS. With the dual starting at 171 the Furies did some maneuvering of their wrestlers to give them a chance to gain an early lead going into the final few bouts. Stout Watson stepped on the mat at 171 and earned an early first period fall. Kwame Seymour accepted a forfeit at 189 and Lauri Antilla kept things going for the Furies as he pulled out to an early lead at 215. Antilla would eventually build that lead and earn the team a major decision victory to put the Furies up 16-0. Brett Harris accepted a forfeit at 285 and he was followed by youngster Atticus Funk who made quick work of his CCDS opponent by pinning him in just under one minute. Those two matches put the Furies on top 28-0. After CCDS took the next two matches, Jordan Budd accepted a forfeit at 125 and Cole Edwards did the same at 130 to add to the FCDS lead. Brian Murphy fought hard but fell via a fall late in the second period at 135 but David Wall stepped up and pinned his opponent in only 1:15. Christian Funder had his first of two hard matches on the night as he came away with a close win at 145 by a score of 6-4. Daniel Kim dropped the final match of the night in a tight 1-0 match prior to a double forfeit at 160.
FCDS also had their hands full with PDS and it would come down to the wire in the second match of the night. The match started at 189 where Kwame Seymour accepted a forfeit. He was followed by Lauri Antilla who picked up his second win on the night as he defeated his PDS opponent 7-4. Brett Harris accepted another forfeit at 285 to put the Furies up 15-0. PDS would battle back at the lower weight classes as a they rattled off four pins in a row to take the lead 24-15. Cole Edwards got things going again for the Furies as he picked up a first period fall to get FCDS back to within three. After another win via fall for PDS, David Wall came up big as he picked up a third period fall over his PDS opponent to get the Furies back in contention in the match. Christian Funder picked up his second win on the night with another close match, winning 6-5 over Richie Erb. At 152, Dylan Celendar came up big for FCDS. Wrestling up a weight class Celendar pulled out a 10-7 decision that put the Furies up 33-30. Max Reavis then stepped in at 160 and kept it close, dropping a decision 6-3, paving the way for Stout Watson to win the dual with a victory. Watson came through in convincing fashion as he earned a first period fall to seal the match with a 39-30 score.
Next up for the Furies is a JV event Saturday at Glenn and the following Saturday the varsity team will travel to Atlanta, GA for the Southeastern Prep School Slam, which will feature some of the best private schools in the southeast!
Falcon Frenzy Recap (12/4)
On Friday a small band of Fury wrestlers traveled west to Hendersonville to compete at the always challenging Falcon Frenzy, hosted by West Henderson H.S. With only seven wrestlers competing, the Furies achieved a top ten finish in the team standings out of 26 total teams while crowning one champion, a runner up, and two sixth place finishers.
Christian Funder led the way by bringing home his first Falcon Frenzy title after finishing as runner-up last season. Funder kept his undefeated season record intact as he dominated the competition by wining via pin or technical fall in all of his matches. Funder needed only 43 seconds to pin his first opponent on Friday night, advancing to the quarterfinals Saturday morning. In that match he wasted little time as he earned another win by fall in only 30 seconds over his Pisgah H.S. opponent. In the semifinals Funder again dominated his opponent, winning by technical fall late in the second period 16-0. Funder had his hands full in the finals, competing against a very athletic wrestler in Angelo Nunez of RS Central H.S. After nearly giving up a takedown early in the match, Funder immediately took control scoring on multiple actions and by the end of the first period was leading 6-2. In the second period, with Nunez choosing bottom, Funder continued his dominance from the top position as he immediately turned and pinned his worthy opponent midway through the period to win the 145 pound weight class.
Cole Edwards also advanced to the finals at 130 pounds. Edwards dominated the competition early as he opened the tournament with a major decision victory on Friday night moving him into the quarterfinals. In the Saturday morning round Edwards would again dominate his opponent, winning by another major decision 14-0 and advancing to the semifinals. There he would face a tough opponent in Matt Baker of Gibbs H.S. (Tennessee). Edwards would battle hard and come away with another major decision, winning 15-2, using multiple turns from the top position to build his lead and move him into the finals for the second year in a row. In the finals Edwards met up with a very talented wrestler in Aaron Trull, a 5th place finisher in the NCHSAA state tournament last season. Edwards battled hard in a back and forth match with multiple scrambles but ended up on the losing end by a score of 7-1.
Jay Baughan, wrestling at 152 pounds, also advanced to the semifinals. Baughan, in his first tournament competition following football season, opened his tournament with a pin in just 1:06 to move him into the quarterfinals. In this bout Baughan received a forfeit after his opponent did not make weight the second day allowing the Fury wrestler to advance to the semifinals. There he met an athletic wrestler in William Ramos of TC Roberson H.S. Baughan wrestled well and had multiple opportunities to pull out the win but fell just shy of reaching the finals, falling by a score of 7-2. He then wrestled his way back to a 6th place finish after dropping two close bouts in a row in the consolation rounds.
Brett Harris also dominated early in the 285 pound weight class, winning his first two bouts by fall, advancing the Fury senior Captain into the semifinals. Harris fell short of reaching the finals, dropping his semifinals match to a very talented Matt Brock of Enka by fall late in the first period. Harris, like his teammate Baughan, then dropped two consecutive bouts in the consolation rounds to finish in 6th place overall in a very tough heavyweight weight class.
Senior Kwame Seymour, competing at 171 pounds, finished his Falcon Frenzy tournament with a 2-2 record. After dominating his first opponent on Friday night Seymour dropped a heart breaker in the quarterfinals Saturday morning in the closing seconds to Nathan Marsh of McDowell H.S. Seymour bounced back with an 8-2 victory in the next round before dropping another match in the closing seconds to Duke-bound Nigel Jones of TC Roberson.
David Wall also helped catapult the Furies into the top ten with a very dominant opening round performance, defeating his North Henderson opponent via a technical fall 17-0. As always, Wall wrestled hard but dropped his next two matches by fall and a hard fought 7-1 decision, getting eliminated from the tournament late in the second day.
Lauri Antilla also played a major role in the Furies top ten finish as he opened his Friday night with a win by pin late in the first period. He then dropped two matches in a row, the first by fall to the #1 seed from Robbinsville and the second by fall to a tough wrestler from West Henderson.
The Fury Wrestlers now have a much needed break, taking two weeks off from competition before they take part in the City/County Championships on December 19th at Parkland HS.

Jordan Budd, another young Fury, stepped into the varsity lineup and dominated his SL opponent, needing only 1:24 to put Nick Burrow to his back and get the fall! Cole Edwards followed that 125 pound victory with a pin of his own at 130 in only 22 seconds. Once again, a young Fury stepped into the varsity lineup at 135 in Brian Murphy. Murphy wrestled his heart out but came up just short as he was caught in a scramble and pinned late in the third period. Lauri Antilla fought hard in his bout at 189 but was pinned early in the first period to tie the team score at 12. After a Fury forfeit at 215 Brett Harris made quick work of his CA opponent, needing only 55 seconds to get the pin and pull the Furies to within six points. After another Fury forfeit at 103 Brad Murphy wrestled hard once again, but was unable to pull out a win as he was pinned late in the first period. James Pike would also end up on the losing end of things as he dropped a tough loss to multiple time state place winner and past state champion Alex Rosenthal of CA with an early first period fall. Jordan Budd also wrestled extremely well at 125 but fell via a fall late in the match to continue the Chargers’ roll. Cole Edwards got the Furies back on track again with a forfeit victory at 130. At 135, rookie Brian Murphy dropped a hard fought loss to veteran CA wrestler Zach Wilson by fall midway through the second period, putting the match out of reach in favor of CA. David Wall followed this up with a dominant win via a pin in only 1:08. Christian Funder stayed undefeated on the year by earning another pin at 145 in only 1:24 of the first period.

A big thank you goes out to Julie Baughan for being the lucky parent to respond first to the request of a needed gate worker and she won the honor of working the door! Also, thank you to John Budd and the rest of the Fury parents who provided food for the hungry wrestlers following the long evening of wrestling!
Next up for the Furies is a trip to West Henderson H.S. and the always competitive Falcon Frenzy tournament. This is a grueling two day event and the Furies will be up against some of the best public school wrestlers from the western part of the state as well as Tennessee and South Carolina. Wish them luck as the travel up the hill on Friday!
Wrestlers Finish 3rd at Glenn Invite (11/21)
On Saturday the FCDS Varsity wrestling team traveled to nearby Kernersville to compete in the season opening Phillip Reed Glenn Invitational. Traveling with only eight wrestlers, the Furies were looking for top notch individual performances from all eight wrestlers in order to compete for a top three finish against teams bringing in full lineups. The Furies did not disappoint! These eight wrestlers dominated early and kept the intensity level up as they wrestled their way to a 3rd place finish as a team out of 14 teams.
Leading the way for the Furies and bringing home 1st place honors were juniors Christian Funder at 145 and Stout Watson at 160. Not far behind were seniors Kwame Seymour and Brett Harris who both finished second at 171 and 285 respectively. Also having a stellar day was Cole Edwards at 130. In what was probably the deepest weight class in the tournament, Edwards wrestled his way to an outstanding 3rd place finish. David Wall followed this performance with a great day himself, finishing in 4th place.
Christian Funder started his day off with a fall in just :39 seconds over his first opponent. He followed this performance with a hard fought 4-0 victory over a very tough Jeremy Shives of Trinity HS. In the finals, Funder faced a very skilled and formidable opponent in Ray Schmucker of NW Guilford. After giving up the first takedown in a scramble, Funder took control the rest of the match walking away with a 9-3 decision and the tournament championship.
Competing for the first time since January due to an injury, Stout Watson dominated all opponents he faced on the day, despite moving up four weight classes from 135 to 160. In the first round, Watson pinned his Northwood Tennessee opponent in just 1:46. His second round match went the full three periods but was never in doubt as he defeated his Bishop McGuinnes opponent 17-5. In the finals, Watson was dominating his Central Davidson opponent 9-1 in the second period when his opponent had to injury default late in the period, giving Watson his 4th Glenn Invite title.
Kwame Seymour had a great day as well, reaching the finals at 171 pounds. Seymour defeated his first round opponent from Leesville Road via a fall late in the second period. Seymour also pinned his second opponent from West Stokes early in the 3rd period. In the finals, Seymour battled hard against a very tough Cameron King of Trinity HS. Following three periods of battle and multiple scrambles, Seymour unfortunately came up on the losing end by a score of 4-1.
